Which would you buy LOL (hate these threads)

If you were in the market for a hand cannon which would you choose..


S&W .500 magnum with 8" ported barrel, interchanagble comps, with Hi Vis front sight.

or

Taurus Raging Bull .454 Casull with 8" barrel?

Taurus is about $900 bucks new
S&W is $1,200 new

Ammo for either is pricy and the .500 costs a little more than .454 but ammo price doesn't make or break which I choose. If I choose the .500 I would just not buy 200 rounds to start with, like I would with the Taurus. Would buy less ammo with the .500 due to the price of the gun, not the price of the ammo.

You don't need to bother with the whole buy neither thing because they are both impractical speech. I had a .44 mag for 15 years, so I'm aware of how pointless both of these are. All the guns I have are for fun, not hunting or personal protection. Well I do have a .38 special snubby I keep handy, otherwise they are just to collect and shoot for fun.

 

S&W .500, i was looking at one the other day. Its a heavy beesh! I dont know anything about the Taurus. The .500 looks fun to shoot.

 

For large caliber I'd get the Ruger Super Red Hawk Alaskan .454 Casull. You get all the fire power in a snub nose and a concealable package. Not to mention a beautiful piece. Other than that, the S&W .500 to leave at home, I suppose.

 

the correct answer is, "Whichever you can shoot better."

Does no good to buy a hand cannon if you're limp wristed and a .32 makes you flail everywhere...

I have a super redhawk in .44 mag that I love!
Hadn't shot the .500 but looked one over and held it at a local gunshop. Freakishly, cartoonish large. And that was the small barrel.

 

Get both, plus the Super Redhawks others mentioned. Then later a Blackhawk or two. The list never ends and you can't ever have too many...

 

Haha not the first time I have heard (literly) Cartoonish to describe the .500's size. I blew it up to actual size on my screen and I'm sure it looks bigger in person. Biggest difference I can see is the .500 is about 1" taller than the .44 I had and longer due to the barrel.

There is a shooting range about 45 minutes away and they have lots of guns they rent and sell. I'll see if they have either or maybe even both to mess with.

I love the looks of the Taurus but have heard the quality with them is hit or miss. The .500 S&W model I'm looking at has better sights and I think the Hogue grips are nicer than the factory Taurus grips. The Taurus grips seem small, especially at the bottom.

I have Hogue grips on most of my other handguns and they are great. Hogue and Pachmayr don't make grips for the .454 and nobody seems to make aftermarket sights for the .454 either. That kind of sucks because I don't want to use a scope on either.

I would like to make up my mind soon, so I can have it before vacation next month.

 

My vote is for the raging bull. But you should also check out the S&W .460...gun is a cannon.

 

In that category, buy the SW.
I have a Taurus (Tracker Ti, not Raging Bull) and while I trust it and it works really well, I wouldn't risk a super hi-CUP cartridge in a Taurus.
You will always have better resale with an SW.
I've shot the SW 500 and 460.
Nice guns and you could hunt with them pretty effectively.
I'd consider reloading, if I were you.

 

What about a raging Bull in .44 mag? Do you think the .44 mag Taurus would hold together or blow up? I decided I don't want the 454 Casull. I know it's suppose to have about twice the muzzle energy as a .44 mag but looking at the rounds side by side, I just can't see it being double, they almost look like the same size round. I know it's double the energy because balasitics don't lie. I either want another .44 mag or the biggest mofo on the block.

Now I'm thinking of just getting a 6" Raging Bull in .44 mag, since the 8" barrel isn't available in CA or the S&W .500 mag. If I got the 6" Taurus, I could probablly buy both guns, though I would probablly wait till xmas to buy the .500. However I don't want two hand cannons, so I need to decide. I'm kinda leaning towards the Cartoon cannon because of build quality but that freakin Taurus, even in the 6" barrel, is so puuurty and modern looking. Would even look nice with a low pro red dot like an aimpoint.

 

what would yall say for me, being that i have never shot a handgun before.
but i shoot rifles and shootguns all the time.

want to buy one for protect/ recreation and no clue what to start with. even though i have a year before i can legally buy one

 

Depends on how much you want to spend on ammo. If you're you're using it for home defense as well as fun, I would say, 9mm or 40 S&W. For home defense the .40 would be better IMO than the 9mm but 9mm ammo is a little cheaper.


I wouldn't want to get shot with either a 9 or 40 and I would and do target shoot my .40, in fact that's what I buy all my guns for. I use a 5 shot 38 special snub nose next to my bed, everything else is locked up.

But which would be best... Those questions usually end in a big pissing contest and closed threads LOL. Just read a lot and come to your own conclusion.

 

500 mag. It's a blast to shoot. 2.5 lb trigger pull on the performance center one. Really easy to double tap.

 

The whole double tap thing was planned out by S&W on purpose. It's their idea of full auto revolver, that fires in two round burts.

Of course the second round goes pretty much straight up.

 

Egh screw this. I just don't feel comfortable with the reviews I keep reading about Taurus. Their stuff just seems to be too much hit and miss on quality.

I'm ordering the S&W .500 Tomorrow. Pay once, cry once. Well actually I will cry when I buy ammo for it too Reloading sounds like a fun new hobby to take up.

I will put up some pics in about 2 weeks due to 10 day CA wait and shipping time.

It's possible I may end up buying both, though the 2nd one would be later in the year. I like .44 mags too, that's why I had one for 15 years but I'm looking for something different.

My biggest concern with the Taurus is how they hold up years and a few hundred rounds down the road. Put up some pics of yours, maybe I will change my mind yet again LOL
