Hey guys! so today i dropped my 2000 taco off at the dealership for the frame recall test..Just got a call and it failed the test....toyota has not yet gotten back to them about what they are going to do (replace or buy back). My questions is on kbb my private party sale price for my truck a 2000 with 128k is only like 5,800 but i know that if i sold it around here I could easily get 7-8k..especially with a w transmission... Does anyone have experience with this and what they use to calculate ..is it retail value or private party and how the hell do they determine buy back or replace.

150% kbb private sale i believe. i think you can just ask them to replace the frams if you want to keep it? im sure others can chime in!

you could ask for that value! not sure what they would say though. kbb favors the buyer

No matter what condition your truck is in, Toyota will buy it back at 150% the KBB "excellent condition" price.

Go to KBB and feed in your trucks options and you'll get a close guess to what they will offer.

Your call on that choice, if cab and bed are in great shape and everythings working. Then factor in cost to replace vs keeping, you pay the bills :)

    This.

The truck will almost certainly not pass the NYS inspection to allow it back on the road when the current inspection expires, due to the holes in the frame it took for them to fail it.

Simply put, its a no brainer to take the 150%. Your other options are far less attractive.

Here is what you need to know:

    1) It is 150% of KBB Retail Value!!!! (hell of a deal)
    2) You do not have a choice. There is a buyback only on the 95-2000. Frame replacement on the 2001-04. If you really do not want to take the money and drive away, the money is off the table.
    3) Go buy yourself another toyota tacoma.

Disclosure: I had a 2000 tacoma extracab, 4x4, 3.4L V6, 5 speed manual, with bed liner, tow hitch, and cap. Toyota takes all the features and add ons into the price just as KBB does. It had 155K and was worth 7,800 KBB retail which meant I got about 11,600 from toyota.

I have had one of each. They are all great trucks. I do like my second gen better than my first gen. I have never replaced anything other than routine maintenance on either since 1998.

I love it. Frankly, I took the money I got and upgraded to the 04 xtracab with TRD package and some nicer creature comforts for only another $1000 out of pocket with far less miles (84K). I think the 01-04 have nicer features and otherwise are the same as the 95-00 models. That is what I suggest you do also if you want to stay in a tacoma. That is unless you want to go second generation but I did not have the money to do and did not want to have a monthly payment.

Heads up: the 2001 to 2004 have the same frame problems. Toyota replaces the frame if it fails and they are covered under the 15 year extended warranty. In addition, down the road toyota can decide to buy back at 150% of KBB retail value if they stop replacing the frames. Either way you are covered.

I know initially (not sure if it's still going on) that you got more money if the money they initially gave you went as a down payment on another toyota. And on top of that you got even more if it was towards another toyota truck. I believe they had to be new though. Don't take that as gosphel though...I might just be pulling it out of my ass.
