So i see at the local credit union there is a 2006 lotus elise that's been repoed. It has a blown engine. Basically whoever puts the highest bid in wins the car. Would it be worth putting in a bid and putting in a motor myself? it looks like they run a 2zz which ive found online for about $2,500. I've always thought they were a cool little car. what do you guys think?

They're fun little cars, especially the ones with the SC. But 190hp is still quick in them since they weigh next to nothing. If you can find the motor for cheap enough and get the car cheap enough I'd go for it.

the banks website says its worth 22k-30k, but theres no way someones going to pay that for a car with a blown engine....right?[IMG]

thats exactly the price i was thinking. i see theres a 2zz in Sacramento for 1,900...now when theres a engine blown, does this make the car salvage title?

If you don't fix it, buy it and part it out. You would be able to double your money back.

but if i do fix it, is it considered a salvage title because of the blown engine?
i want to fix it and sell it for double...i think i could but if it's a salvage title i obviously wont get nearly as much

The goalie on my hockey team has one of these, awesome cars! For 10-12k total price I would pick one up any day. If you are looking to make a dime off of it by flipping it though, I would do more research.

I don't think there is any reason it would be a salvage title. A car gets a salvage title when it has been damaged - in an accident - to the point that it is not worth repairing.

The blown engine (and the repo) might show up on a Carfax, but not on the title. I think it would be a great deal at $10K.

theres only two in my county(that i know of) this was the second one.. I'm hoping people are seeing it and researching and realizing it has a blown engine so they wont bid on it. I have no problem throwing in another engine, while hopefully everyone else doesn't want to put the time in :) time to do some research!

Would it be cheaper to rebuild the engine(if possible) or to buy a new one?

That would be a nice one to have. I would make sure the exact cost to replace the engine. $2500 for an engine sounds low for a $50,000 car.

I thought that was cheap too, but everywhere I look they range from 1,900 to 2,500. The price looks pretty consistant. I just called a engine shop to see what there price on a rebuild would be. Just waiting them to call back.

haha i told her we could sell her 03' beetle.(turbo diesel *50mpg) but she said she wants a "mommy car"(uh-oh). But I think it would be sick to have this car i need a commuter car for work and school I think these get like 29city 30-something highway... Or to even sell it, theres only a few here so it would be sold quick
