$650 Damage caused by soft tonneua...

I have a Truxedo roll-up tonneu on my tacoma, it likes to unlatch at highway speeds (sometimes with wind gusts or in calm weather) This has happened to me 25-30 times in the appx 2 years that I have had the cover. This time, I pulled off the highway to re-latch, a crosswind grabbed the entire cover, sending the lock bar at the tailgate to fly up and smash into my roof - it sounded like I got t-boned. The tension on the cover seems correct, no matter my adjustment, it still does the same thing.

I got an estimate yesterday for $647 (more than the cover cost). Has anybody else had an issue like this? Trying to decide what I want to do next....

 

Ouch, sorry to see that happen. Nope, got a LoPro QT. I did install a second latch on the pass side since there was only one on the drivers side. Did this just for security reasons but glad I did after hearing this.

 

i have been using the same truxedo cover low pro qt or some shit for over 2 years on this truck and 5 on my nissan......never had a problem like that....
that sucks but i would not spend the money to fix that lil ding in the roof...try a dentless repair guy for a $150 OR SO AND BUFF THE REST AND CALL IT GOOD
OR BUFF IT YOURSELF AND LET IT GO

The dude told me $20 to touch up the cracked paint, being a broke student... that is what I will probably do. I was thinking about sending Truxedo an email, I'm sure they won't do much with so many factors involved.. but it may be worth a shot.

Does anyone have pictures or ideas of more secure locking options? Getting out on the highway several times during a long trip is a real pain in the ass!

 

I am a truxedo dealer in indiana. We have had a few problems with those doing that on other trucks. The solution has been to replace the latch assembly. Or you can always double latch it for more security. Thats about your only options!

Personally, I would have gotten rid of the fuckin' thing after the first incident. Sorry 'bout your rig though...

 

This was the first time it actually lifted off of the bed rails, it usually just un-latches. Either way, it's an inconvenience.

 

What is your comprehensive deductible? If its well under the $647, I say make a claim.

 

I just called Truxedo, and in 5 minutes I have new velcro, a new vinyl cover and new latches being mailed to me on May 2. Holy customer service, Batman!

 

Did they offer to repair your truck?

 

Sell the cover now and fix the truck. Then get an access cover. It's the real deal and truxedo copied it.

 

a dent wizard can get most of that out, then have it touched up

Well, at least they are replacing parts for you. That sucks! I lol when I read the post though...

I decided to go with an Extang solid cover and the thing has sweet. Like others have said, maybe you should sell that one and get another?

 

My Extang Tuff tonneou cover used to unlatch at the back sometimes but thats because I didnt install these metal brackets that went with it. So that was my stupid fault. But once I installed the metal brackets, never had a problem since.
