OBX Sand?

Hey - just curious what type of sand is on the beaches of OBX? Is it the sugary sand type? Just checking to see if my Prerunner stands a chance in OBX.

i have taken my 4x4 taco to OBX twice. i aired down to under 20psi and had no issues. my buddy refused to air down his 4x4 tundra and he did ok but not nearly as good. i would be nervous with 2wd but if you go with someone with 4x4 you should be ok, the tow guys out there charge an arm and a leg to get you unstuck

 

For the most part it's "regular" beach sand. Nothing too spectacular. You'll be better if you drop your PSI, but you're probably OK running 30PSI... Just avoid the reddish-color, that stuff is big, fluffy, and can suck you down. Depending where you get on, there might be a small dune on the entrance path.

Stay on the more packed stuff and you won't need 4wd.

It's pretty loose sand. Not very packed. Just air down to 15-20ish psi and use 4hi and you will be fine. Also go easy on the skinny pedal. Wheel spin in sand is just going to dig you deeper. Unlike mud, there's nothing solid underneath, just more sand, and eventually water.

Guess the smart thing to do is stay away from the beach. So is there nearby parking to the beach if I wanted to go surf fishing?

 

Yeah, but I'm sure other people will have the same idea and wanna fish right by the access ramp too.
