Looks pretty slick. Anything from the Big Sky Country has got to be good!

Only thing I can think of is the fact that our trucks are relatively small...is there going to be enough headroom?

Yeah the ELS ones are so sick! 2 drawbacks though...
-Price: 4x more expensive...not worth it to me
-The ELS racks are much more specific to the type of gun. This one seems to be a 1 size-fits-all, which I like because right now I have a Mossberg 590 and Savage 111, but Later I might also have something different like a PTR 91 or Remington 887. Plus I would put my buddies' guns up there to go out hunting.

Also for security on these racks, I would probably just run a cable lock between the breach and the main bar. Seems simple enough.

I would probably mount it above the Xtra cab portion. Behind the driver/passenger heads but in front of the rear seat headroom.

That looks pretty sweet. I have a DC and I was thinking about fabbing a rack behind my rear seats. I think if I removed all the plastic trim and maybe mounted a rack similar to the one your lookin @ it would look bad @$$! Hmmm, I think I just gave myself a weekend project:D

I'm actually getting ready to visit a machine shop with exactly this as my goal. I want to remove the plastic junk from behind the rear seat on my doublecab and replace it with a decent locking gun rack. Unfortunately, I am new to metalwork, so it will take me a few iterations to get a useful rack. If you have any luck, please post a how-to with pics. (and cross-post it here)

I got an idea I'm going to run by my friend that owns a machine shop. I was going to have something mocked up to replace the hanger hooks in the back of the cab for something to hold fishing poles, rifles, things of that sort. I was thinking something where we just unscrew the two hooks and install whatever I come up with in place if the stock hooks. I figure you can hang suits from the rack if need be... Get me some feedback on this idea and maybe I can have my buddy stap a few extra racks out if anyones interested...

That is the rack, Big Sky single, that I have in my truck. I just had it installed a couple of weeks ago and could not be happier. As you can see - it does accomodate my S&W AR15 well and installs very solidly. It is nice and tight against the roof in the back near the rear of the cab. I find the headroom a little wanting in my Tacoma so I had the installation as far back as they could. As far as security - I opted not for the locking rack due to hassle of installation and my rack is used more for transport than anything -- I would not leave a gun in the truck nor would I let it out of my sight if I had the gun in the truck. The cable lock is a good idea and one I might do since it would add a layer if I ever had to violate a cardinal rule of taking my gun or not being out of sight.

Overall, I am very happy and did what I think to be a good bit of research on rifle racks before getting this one.

That looks good. I live in California and the gun laws are silly. I own ar's and will test out the design with various rifles of mine, but I really want a rack to hold a couple fishing poles. It will be solid enough to carry rifles when we're done. I'm going over to the shop tomorrow afternoon and hopefully well have a preliminary design i can through up on the forum.

here is what we have come up with so far. if you look in the rear window of the tacomas, i believe all models are the same window design... my original idea mounting into the coat hooks was scrathed, its just into sheet metal and wont hold an AR or other rifle. anyways the vertical brackets go into the track the window slides in. yes it does limit the window opening by 1 inch, but i think its well worth it. so, the vertical supports go into the track 1 inch in on the top and bottom. very sturdy so far, i opened the window and gave it a soild tug a few times, no budge. mind you this is a prototype we whipped up in an hour, so its not pretty and by no means complete. the 2 cross pieces are channel, top facing up bottom facing down. this way we can design a number of different attachments that slide back and forth and tighten down to accomidate almost anything... we will work on brackets next monday when i go back to the shop, but for the first attachment design i like the look of the AR up high in the cab like the previous post so ill make something that clamps on and raises its hooks up in front of the coat hangers, then develope something that goes across the top third of the rear window for another rifle, or in my case, my fishing poles...

the finished product will have adjustable window track brackets that will hopefully make it more universal for other trucks, and also for the quad cab tacomas in case this low profile preliminary design dosent clear the head rests. its out of aluminum and will probably be powder coated black...

i talked to my bud that owns the shop and helped me with the design, he said if we can get 100 at a time we can bang them out fairly cheap!! so the more people interested the better!

here is an idea of about how high id like the first rifle mount, thats a 20" Franklin Armory flat top ar 15 with an A2 stock, a long, heavy rifle. ill probably end up with a design that puts the pistol grip parallel with the roof of the cab, so you can mount other items to the bracket.

Looks awesome Tim. I wanted to get one to carry my remington 870 (and rifle I am hoping to purchase) over to my cabin and back where I hunt.

I dig the roof racks but I wouldn't be comfy with one unless it was pretty well hidden. Behind the seat would be nice, but I think you would want to pin the seats together so they always come forward together and offer fast access. No easy answer.

I'm from washington myself, marysville. How is the rack holding up? i'm looking at getting one set up in my truck too. Is there a lock on that rack for your rifle?
