The only think holding me back is the fact that having somewhere to stay would be hard. I'll stick to donating and giving blood for now. Scottsboro took a beating, so I might go up there within the month and help out my family.

Donate some blood, if you can! I always donate when I can as I have O-NEG or O-POS...whatever is uni. I always forget. It might seem like it doesn't do much, but trust me, every little bit counts.

It was chaos here in town yesterday. Half of Stevenson is gone. But we were the only ones with gas or power. 4 or 5 counties of people were in line at our 3 gas stations. Fights broke out over gas. People cutting in line. Pure chaos. I know several people who were right in the path of it. They are in icu right now. Thoughts and prayers please.

Went out to Pleasant Grove today with my youth minister and some friends. The damage is unreal. If you can do anything, please please do. These people need our support. If you can't volunteer your time, try to donate supplies or anything to those in need. Like Kurt said, every little bit helps.

Hey guys, just a quick word for those who want to volunteer.

I've been working with the local EMA and ARES volunteers for the past two days, and here is what the word is.

If you want to give money, the Red Cross is best equipped to turn donations into results as quickly as possible.

If you want to give goods, then the Salvation Army has the staff to depot goods and distribute them.

If you want to give labor / talents / muscle / time, then call 211 and talk to Hands On Birmingham, and they will contact you. Alternately I believe you can register through the website: http://www.handsonbirmingham.org/

I would stress that coordination is key. Hub Harvey who is the Jefferson County Emergency Coordinator said, "There's always two disasters, the natural disaster, and then the donation disaster." What he means is that people are trying to do good, and if it is not coordinated somewhat then it is VERY easy to miss people and have things slip through the cracks.

The ARES Ham radio operators are doing a great job coordinating efforts, as are the Red Cross, Southern Baptist Convention Feeding Unit, National Guard, various amateur radio clubs, churches, community service groups, etc. However, the crucial part is that the Jefferson County Emergency Operation Center (EOC) knows what is going where, so that things aren't duplicated.

Thank you so much to everyone who is willing to help. Being out with the folks who have had their lives turned upside down yesterday and today was an incredibly humbling experience. I strongly encourage anyone who can give their time to do so.

Just got back online. Went to Nashville yesterday and bought a generator. Today it looks like AT&T got their DSL powered up, so when I turn on the generator, I can get to the internet. SouthEast Huntsville didn't get hit bad. It appears just a few trees here and there.

It was definitely one of the most humbling experiences Ive ever been through. Just talking to the people and offering a bottle of water or some snacks can go a long way. We worked with a local amateur radio club that was stationed across from the first Baptist Church and it was very organized. We had to go through a national guard/police checkpoint even to get into the city. I assume they were checking if you were with an organized group, but they were turning a lot of cars away.
