Better Gas Mileage

my gas mileage is looking sooo bad now i topped off my tank and set my trip odometer to 00000, filled up with 93 octane and removed the secondary air filter the same day, but right now i'm at 215 miles and the needle is sitting at the quarter tank mark, and it usually falls fast once it gets under a quarter so i MIGHT squeeze 275 miles from this tank driving slower than i usually do, which is a solid 13-14mpg...i have no clue whats going on

 

Tires, driving style, height (lift or not), wind, traffic, A/C, idle time, load/weight, engine mods, exterior mods (wind resistance), etc...

All of these effect gas mileage. Without seeing your truck in person and seeing how it is behaving it is really hard to diagnose a fuel economy issue over the internet. That being said - make suddle changes every two tanks or so and see how that affects your fuel consumption.

One other note: I have gotten higher octane fuel before (~93) that had water in it. It was an older gas station, and they didn't sell very much high octane so it sat longer.

 

the place i filled up i've always taken my cobra and wrx to and i've never really had a problem, but i've only used my a/c in my truck twice this past summer, if it's under 92 degrees out i just open the windows and drive faster

 

I just got my worse tank of gas yet. I was at 250 miles at a quarter of a tank. i calculated that i got around 14mpg. I have never gone under 16 and that was when i had a radar detector on teh way to charleston and averaged around 95mph! The only thing thats changed since my last tank was that i got the suspensin TSB done but my mileage shouln't have been affected by such a small increase in height. The only thing i can think is that the tank wasn't completely full when i filled it up last. maybe the pump stopped before it was full and i just left. I havn't even been using the AC. i'll be watching this next tank VERY carefully

 

you think yours is bad?? i'd be glad if i was at 250 miles at a quarter tank, i am at 220 at a quarter tank! and thats with no highway, just city averaging about 40-50mph and NOT driving as fast or accelerating as hard as i normally do. does the VVT-I take a tank or two to adjust to different driving conditions??

 

Not that i know of. I have consistantly gotten 18-20mpg until this tank. i dont know what the deal is.

 

i dont think i've ever gotten over 17mpg no matter where i was or what i was doing. i usually accelerate to where the auto trans shifts at about 3500 rpms

 

if i'm just casually driving mine shifts around 2500 or less

 

damn then no wonder why my mileage is sucking. i still think i should be getting better than 14 tho!

 

Yeah, anything above 3,000 RPM is going to start hogging your fuel. Same is true for the 2.7L. If you rap the 2.7L up to 3,500 RPM regularly, you can see your mileage drop by 2-3 MPG. I had one take that I got 19 MPG in the city by flooring it all over the place (usually get 21-22).

I try to keep mine under 3,000 RPM. It isn't that difficult since my commute is mostly highway. My problem is mild road rage. I don't DO 65 MPH in the left lane while blocking traffic - other people shouldn't either.

 

Did anyone watch the news last night regarding oil prices? Something like $97 per barrel now and that may go up to $150 per barrel in the future due to a series of events overseas and in Venezuela. That would put gas at an average of $5.50 per gallon! i dont know what i'm gonna do if that happens. i guess i'll have to learn how to ride a motorcyle. If gas gets that high the government needs to step in and do something.

 

That's the main reason I wish they had a diesel Tacoma. I would've bought that instead, and did whatever it took to make my own biodiesel. I still want to do that for my oil furnace in my house. At least maybe I could cut THAT bill down!

 

I improved my milage by purchasing a transit card. My round trip commute to work close to 70 miles. Now I drive 5 miles to the commuter train.

 

i guess i'm gonna have to start stealing gas....

 

^i'm trying to figure out how to hijack a tanker truck and hide it in my backyard....

 

A baseball bat to highjack it and a big tarp to hide it.... i like to consider myself a problem solver

 

That'd be one big damn tarp...ought to try one of them huge Army cafeteria tents...

 

YES PLEASE!!! 2.5L or 3.0L D4D with a 5 speed automatic and 4 Wheel Drive. - I would never need another vehicle again in my life.
