Just bought an 04 Tacoma / Question

I bought an '04 Tacoma DBL cab 4x4 the other day and I am loving it! I have been searching for the right one for the past 2 years. I am excited to start working on it.

It currently has:
31" AT Tires
Line X bed liner
Tinted Windows

Last night I added bike racks to the bed of the truck and new floor mats. My front turn signal is busted so I ordered a new one yesterday as well.



My Questions?????
My truck came with TRD stickers on it. I am not sure if it is truly TRD though. I was wondering if I have a factory rear locker or not. I'm really hoping I do. There is not a button on my dash for rear locker. Some people have told me that it could be electronically controlled when I am in 4L.

By your steering wheel on your left where you adjust the height there should be a "rr lock" button

 

if its a true trd offroad and you have the v-6 it should have a skid plate on the bottom of the gas tank and should have an e locker button next to the dash dimmer knob on the left of the steering wheel

 

on my brothers '03 TRD the rear locker button is on the dash left of steering wheel, around same area of the ECT button and dimmer knob

 

The only button I have next to my dimmer switch is the ECT PWR button. So I guess I need to start looking for a rear locker to install!

 

crawl under and look at the pumpkin if it is there will be a mess of shit on the driverside if it is locked

Another Question:
The ride in the truck is bumpy. I know that it is an older truck but I would like to make it a smoother ride. I would also like to get an inch or two of lift on the front to level things out. I am more concerned about the way it rides though. Should I just replace the coilovers or is there more involved?

Bilstein shocks front and back or a OME lift front and back would probably solve your problem and also give you the desired lift.

Hmmm, I don't think that TRD sticker looks right. Can you post us a better picture from the side that shows its position relative to the top of bed, tailgate, and wheel well?

yeah i would go with bilstein 5100s. they seem to be the best bang for your buck.

and instead of installing a locker which costs alot of money you can go to a junk yard and find a rear end that already as the factory locker in it

 

I looked at the same truck last weekend and test drove it down his dirt road. It is not a TRD edition, it just has the stickers on it, which you can buy on EBAY. Overall I thought it was a pretty nice truck and drove good. It looked like the timing belt and waterpump was never changed. So this may be something to look into. Enjoy.

 

Try to look for a stock axle housing with 4.10 gears with the e-locker. My truck wasn't true TRD so I bought the whole entire axle housing with 4.10 gears and the wiring harness.

To answer your second question about a bumpy ride. When my son and I went to look at that truck last weekend I also noticed the front coil springs looked like they were so compressed on the top that the first three or four coils were touching each other, which leads me to believe that when the coils were replaced they used some that were too tall for the application leading them to be over compressed to fit them in there.

Thanks for the help. I'll look at a couple junk yards and see what I can find as far as the rear end is concerned. My main concern right now is getting the suspension right. I've been looking into it and I like the bilstein 5100s.

Its easy to tell the stickers were added after the fact. They are a little to high on the truck. Oh, well. A little more time and money and it will be a TRD!
