DISCLAIMER: I didn't read all 16 pages, but it seems that some people are convinced that 1 is the correct answer.

Hate to burst your bubble, but the correct answer is 9. Multiplication and Division are on the same level, as are addition and subtraction. So when there is both division and multiplication, you follow the left to right rule.

From wiki, the example at the end shows why the "1" group is incorrect:

    Mnemonics

Mnemonics are often used to help students remember the rules, but the rules taught by the use of acronyms can be misleading. In the United States the acronym PEMDAS is common. It stands for Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction. If PEMDAS is followed without remembering to do multiplication and division at the same time and done instead with multplication then division students will get wrong answers. For example, given the expression: 6÷2(1+2), the correct answer is 1. In other English speaking countries, Parentheses may be called Brackets, or symbols of inclusion and Exponentiation may be called either Indices, Powers or Orders, and since multiplication and division are of equal precedence, M and D are often interchanged, leading to such acronyms as BEDMAS, BIMDAS, BODMAS, BOMDAS, BERDMAS, PERDMAS, PEMDAS, and BPODMAS.

These mnemonics may be misleading, especially if the user is not aware that multiplication and division are of equal precedence, as are addition and subtraction. Using any of the above rules in the order "addition first, subtraction afterward" would also give the wrong answer.

The correct answer is 9, which is best understood by thinking of the problem as the sum of positive ten, negative three, and positive two.

OK, in case anyone doesn't want to read my explanation above, simply copy and paste either of these into Google. Answer is 9 either way.

    6÷2(1+2)

Yes, I agree, the quote sounds like it is contradicting itself, doesn't it?

It's 9 because you do the paranthesis first which gives you 6÷2(3). Next you do the division which gives you 3(3) then you multiply which gives you 9. Because this is how the order of operation works:

    1. Paranthesis
    2. Exponents

    3. Multiplication
    3. Division

    4. Addition
    4. Subtraction

You read the problem like a book from left to right.
For example 7+3²-(7+3) would give you 7+9-(7+3) then you would get 7+9-10 then you would get 16-10 then you would get 6.

Or just go here and type it in lol http://www.ecalc.com/

Yeah you are right there is a parenthesis there multiplied by 3. YOU should go back to college and relearn your rules of operations. The 3 is outside the parenthesis so the parenthesis rule does not apply to it, the multiplication rule applies to it.

Here is the problem properly written out:
X(Y) indicate X*(Y) and getting rid of the idea of division. ÷2 --> multiply by .5

    6÷2*(1+2)
    6*.5*(1+2)
    6*.5*(3)
    3*(3)=9

    It's a poorly written equation...

    6/(2(1+2)) = 1

    or

    (6/2)(1+2) = 9

I learned the latter way is correct, but since there's obviously different ways to read it then the writer should be fried. No wonder NASA's Climate Orbiter missed Mars.
