Locking rear Diferential Question.

I have a 2007 PreRunner TRD Sport 2x4. I'm getting ready to move to Denver. I am trying to decide if I should add an ARB rear locking differential to help get around in the snow and mountains. Has anyone made this mod? Is it worth it, or should I just brake down and get a 4X4?

 

NO. If you are locked on the road with snow, there is a high probability you will fishtail and wreck. This will be you

 

4x4 will help you far more than a locker in snow.

 

Get a 4x4 with a locker and tires made for snow and ice!
Mud tires suck on ice, and if you got snow you have ice!
The locker with 2wd will help but not be safe on grades that are slippery.

 

Living in the city or? Planning on doing some exploring in the area? You need to decide if a 4x4 is best based on your lifestyle, where you live there, etc. It will cost you at the end of the day about $1500.00 for the ARB, including install. Learn how to use the locker and it will get you thru most situations. Going to a new 4x4 will cost you more, but finding another used truck with 4x4 may be the way to go if you feel you need a 4x4. If money is no object, get a 4x4 and lock front and rear!

 

Best thing though is good tires.

2WD with good snow tires will trump 4WD with All Seasons.

 

I'll be in the city during the week but plan on spending most of my weekends in the mountains. Skiing, hiking etc.. So, i'm just worried about getting up and down through the passes with snow on the roads.

 

The locker in snow is not worth it. Your backend will slide all over the place and I wouldnt want to use it on the street whenever it gets slick, especially in town. If your sport has the LSD axle in the rear it is much better than the locker in snow. Unless you plan on skiing often, a 2x4 with LSD in the rear and some sandbags is pretty descent for living in Denver. However, if you plan on skiing/riding a bunch or taking trips in the winter, 4x4 for safety. There is no way I could live in Jackson Wy and drive the places I need to without 4x4. Guess if I aired down, used 200+ pounds of sandbags, and carried chains its possible. But on a record breaking winter like we are having that would be a PITA...and I like 4 wheel drive

I have the locker and SOMETIMES wish that I had LSD in the rear. On the flats I get around just fine in 2x4 but the backend of these trucks is so light that I get major one tire fire on ice moving forward at stop signs, and really have to ease into the gas or say to hell with it and click on the 4x4....then all is good. Going over Teton pass in snow in 2x4 in this pickup...forget about it. That would just suck to do everyday

 

LSD, all day, everyday...

Having the LSD in the rear is nice all the time and when I need 4x4, specifically in the snow, it makes things very stable. I plan to lock the front when I regear, for those times that I am really stuck.

If you can upgrade to a 4x4, do it.

I have the LSD and it doesn't stop you from sliding the ass end out and it kills your brakes! Got mine off all the time!
The stability management does keep you straight but also uses your brakes to do it (with cutting power).

I have no idea why you'd need an LSD with 4x4 on when traveling on the snow.

I've only ever needed my locker twice with snow and that was when I high centered myself.

Uhh, I never said you could? I was just stating that traveling on snow, 4x4 has been more than enough to get me where I've needed to go. Having a locker or LSD regardless, I've only ever needed the extra traction of locking/limiting the slip twice in snow.

Have you ever made a mistake OZ? Cause if so you're not qualified to ever correct anyone ever.
