2wd convert to a 4wd???

Hey does anybody have an idea how much work it would take to switch my 2003 tacoma to a 4wd? the cost? thanks guys

X2 it's really not worth it IMO you could trade yours in and buy a 4x4 and save money in the long run. unless your truck is a POS and you cant get any money for it.

 

If you're having to ask this question...you probably shouldn't do it.

Just sell it and buy a 4x4. Much easier.

I've heard that it's actually cheaper in the long run to do the conversion than to trade in and buy a 4x4. That's on the 1st gens and not the 2nd gens though.

OP, try searching. Many people have done this conversion. Off the top of my head I believe you will need a 4wd transmission w/ transfercase, front and rear drive shafts (I believe the 2wd rear drive shaft is a different length than the 4wd), front diff and cv axles etc, and a possibly a 4wd computer. There are probably a few things I'm forgetting.

 

Honestly, if I wanted to do a 4wd conversion, I would just go all out and do a SAS. IMHO, I wouldn't waste the time or money converting it over to 4wd with IFS, when I could build something way better for just a little more money. But if you are dead set on converting it, I would try to find a 95.5-04 4wd that has been wrecked in the rear. That way you have everything you need and from what I've read, the conversions mainly consists of just swapping parts. The frames and everything should be the same.

 

its cheaper to do the conversion than sell and buy a 4x. you can do it for under 1500

 

Converting to 4x4 vs sas cost wise the the 4x4 conversion will be way cheaper. Doing sas would cost atleast 3-5k more.

I think it all depends on finding a donor truck to get the goodies out of. I see you have a 2003. Start there, no manual hubs, just got complicated on which trans you may have because the manual trans and auto trans have different gear ratios in the rear,and you want to match the front ratio to the rear when doing 4x4. And the trasfer case could be push button or manual stick for 4x4( depending on which transmission you have) I looked for an electronic rear locker for mine but thery were way out of my price when I looked, and I think the one I found didn't match my front gear ratio s that would have involved more to change that. When I did a auto to 5 speed on a 74 Datsun it was "plug and play" except for the rear diff, the clutch and brake bolted right up but the auto diiferental and a 5 speed made it a dog off the line but would do highway speeds ok.

 

Also is it a prerunner ?
