When I see that, I think of 6/2(1+2) assuming that 6 is the NUMERATOR and 2(1+2) is the DENOMINATOR so that equals 1. Of course, if it's the other way around, it's 9. What's funny is this is probably on a 1st graders test and 99.9% of them got it right!

Not that I care any more but Like i said this is what i emailed my math professor last night:

"I have a question that has nothing to do with the class. Is the answer
to this equation "6/2(1+2)=?" equals 9 or 1?

This is why I am asking
    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/off-topic-discussion/154271-6-2-1-2-a.html

for the record I thinks its 1

    Thanks"

and this is what she said:

"The way it's typed it's 9. If the (1 + 2) is under the fraction bar, then it is 1."

In other words id depends on how you are looking at where the (1+2) is placed, so technically both groups are right because we can not tell where the (1+2) is placed.

    Settled? Cool

clearly the answer is 1. as in "this is 1 too many math problems for the day"

Well you would never write it (1+2)6/2 ... but you would write 6(1+2)/2. That is 1.

Now I'm no math professor, and I haven't taken a math class in 22 years. And with the advent of computer technology, I am sure rules of nomenclature have shifted to some degree to compensate for the computer's linear equation writing nature (on paper we tend to write more spatially). So I would agree that there might be some ambiguity here.

There may be a generational thing at play too, because my old eyes would never see the "2(1+2)" as written all under the fraction bar. If you want to isolate ALL of "2(1+2)" under the fraction bar, then you would write the equation as 6/(2(1+2)) .. note the extra parentheses. That does give you an answer of 1.

As it is written, without the extra parentheses, I am right...

I crawled to the highest mountain top, seeking the answer from the Great Guru. I found him, and asked the question "WHAT is the answer, Oh Great Guru!?", to which he sat down, let out a sigh, and replied "FUCK!!!"

it's 9. Please tell me they gave this answer already.... It's 9.... whatever is in the parenthesis has be be able to be moved within the problem to read the same answer no matter what.... otherwise order of operations would have a huge flaw.... it's not rocket science... it's a simple math problem....

M and D are read left to right..... like A and S are....

    (1 + 2) = (3)

6/2(3) = either 9 or 1 depending on how you look at it

(3)6/2 = 9 no matter HOW YOU LOOK AT IT!!!!!!!

So answer is 9 and can only be 9 because there can't be flexibility in mathmatics....
