Ouch. DAMN that looks like it really hurt.

I saw one crash in a tunnel in Brussels several years ago. It didn't fair too well bouncing off the walls....

And this is the reason why my wife and I sold our small car for a 4Runner. I will take the hit in gas mileage for their safety.

A friend who owns an autobody shop told me you have to sign a waiver to buy one of these.

not to point out some obvious things but a smart car is basically the same thing as a motorcycle with a little more metal, there made for mgp's not safety...and something like that vs a semi will always loose.

that being said motorcycles are like 50 times more fun the those little things haha

Okay, so this thing fares well in crashes with other cars since it's designed to use YOUR crumple zone. From it's perspective you're just a pile of mash potatoes. What happens when two of these cars crash into each other? Let's play marbles? Well I want to be a "boulder", that's what we call those bigger marbles. I'm going to design a pickup, based on the 'use your crumple zone' philosophy. It won't weight the 5700lbs most full size trucks weigh, just 4700lbs. Okay Smart (1600lb.) Car, run into me now! Where's that crash test showing two Smart Cars crashing into each other?

I have no idea what they cost, but everything I have read says the Smart car gets like, 42 MPG highway. The european version supposedly is diesel and gets 70MPG. But here in the US, only 42 MPG.

So, less fuel mileage than, say a Prius or VW TDI, no safety whatsoever, only two seats, no trunk.

What's the advantage? Are they really cheap to buy or something?

    Any one know?

The car in the picture is not a Smart car, unless it has aftermarket hubcaps. The wheels on a Smart car are THREE bolt. Yes, I know, that's why it's so obvious to me. The back of the hatch also looks different.

    Found it.

    Almost the exact same car.

The Smart body is very good and sturdy. I would bet it's better than the Tacoma in a crash, but the engine and transmission are garbage from what I've heard and read. And it attracts too much attention for me.

You are right the second car was an accident in Brazil and it was a VW Crossfox. I hate the Smart cars and call them death traps every time I see them but neither photo is of an actual Smart Car. I used to be a fireman when I was still living in NY and have seen my fare share of MVAs and it doesn't matter what your driving, if you hit something substantially bigger than you your not going to fare well. Below is a pic I found on the web showing just that.[IMG]
