lol guys really? Still think it's 1? Even though we've had math majors, math teachers, and drawings say the answer is 9, here's some more proof.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YU5IjwugIdQ

I don't think my TI-83 is lying. I've passed quite a few tests with it.

"division symbol" and "forward slash" are the same thing, and will have the same outcome. The ONLY thing that can change this equation to make it 1, is to put more parenthesis around (2(1+2))

    Ok, So....

I originally used the PEMDAS approach and said 1 on the poll. Used "spotlight" on my Mac to confirm:

    Screen shot 2011-04-30 at 5.04.49 PM.jpg

However, I have to agree the answer is 9 now after reading that we (one lovers) are applying PEMDAS incorrectly. (And my Mac is wrong!) I didnt believe it, but read the intardwebs and yes it really is P E MD AS ... MD are done left to right order, and so are AS.

    6/2(1+2)
    6/2*(1+2)
    Parens first
    6/2*3
Multiply and divide (equal precedence done in left to right)
    3*3
    9

    man, I HATE being wrong!

I was under the thought that the 2(1+2) can be represented by (2)(1+2) thus being (2)(3) which is 6. Then 6/6 is equal to 1. Regarding order of ops, you must solve the 2(1+2) first as this is also (2)(1+2) you would have to distribute the 2 over what is inside of the (). Thus 2(X+1) would be 2X+1. In our example, we must solve the right half of the / first. (1+2) = 3 so we have (2)(3) which is 6. 6/6 is 1.

The () around the 2 is understood.

God I hope I am right lol.

    No. 2(X+1) = 2(X)+2(1) = 2X+2

When entered into a calculator as written it returns the answer 9. BUT, calculators make mistakes sometimes.

    Both are correct answers.

wouldnt it depend if it was
    _6__
    2 (1+2) making 1
    orrr

    _6_ x (1+2) making (3)x(3) which equals 9
    2
sorry for the odd formatting but it seems like these would get two different answers?

The answer is 9...3(3)=9...you multiply the number in the () with the number outside the () which gives you 9....
