Bringing black fenders back to life

Decided to finally try all the options I have researched and find the best one. Pictures on the way.

1) Plasti dip
2) Heat gun
3) Armor All and steel wool

 

1st one is heating the fender up with a heat gun, then putting some armor all on it.

2nd one is plasti dipping it. as you can see it isnt as smooth, but still looks similar.

3rd one is for reference, its what all 4 of my fenders looked like prior to finding a permanent fix. so they were pretty bad off

Or you could have removed them and painted them black(along with necessary prep work).

 

Or you can hit them with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser and then treat them with 303 UV protectant.

 

Which is a good temporary fix.

 

BLACK DYE!!! I found this stuff at 4 wheel parts...PFM!!! I swear by this stuff, it's the only thing I have found that really works.

For cleaning up the fender flares, I like to use a product called "Magic Dressing". It does a great job on tires, trim, molding, etc. Heck, it even smells kinda good. Its made by a company called "Auto Magic". You might be able to track some down at automotive paint/detail shops if you are interested.

It is a solvent based silicone dressing. As such, in the long run it will cause more fade on plastic surfaces.

When it comes to exterior plastics there are 3 options. Solvent/silicone based products that will last from a few days to a few weeks before fading, but reapplication will be necessary. Water based dressings that will tend to last a few days to a couple weeks but will require reapplication. **Paint**Prep, primer, base, clear the surface and treat it like any other painted panel.

 

Well, it looks fine after 3 months, and we'll see how it holds up over time with regular washing and reapplication of 303.

Additionally, it did not require any R&R or prep work, which works for my schedule and priorities.

 

I use black paste shoe polish . Lasts for months and months.

thanks for all the responses guys.

i've used magic eraser before and that did last a few months. just looking for something more permanent. what i ended up doing today was armor all/mothers back to black and steel wool all the fenders except the one i plasti dipped. they all look real good...for now.

the purpose of the steel wool is to take off that oxidation level, just to let ya'll know.

we'll see how they look after a few washes and rains

 

In all seriousness, brake fluid works great. If you're hesitant, try it in an inconspicuous area first. Make sure it has sufficient time to dry, or seal, before coming in contact with the elements.

welp, been through a rainstorm and about a week and of just driving. looks pretty good so far. when it rains, the water beads up on all 4 fenders that have been treated differently. supposed to get some rain this weekend. we'll see how they hold up

 

I might go the shoe polish route. My bumper as well as the area around my wheel wells is all black plastic trying to find the best thing to make them shiny.

I used the mr clean magic eraser on my plastic last night. The truck is only like 5 months old so the plastic still looks brand new when clean. So I just cleaned them last night and I am going to put 303 sealant on them when it comes in the mail tommorow.
