    I was getting ready to replace my stock electric "snail" horn with something a little louder. I am not into air horns but I thought the stock horn was a little too anemic, so I was going to give it an upgrade.

    I inspected the stock horn first, located behind the front grill and in front of the radiator. There was a metal baffle blocking ths sound, attached to and completely covering the horn outlet. I couldn't get a pic showing the baffle in place but I easily popped the baffle off with my fingers, shown in the pic below. The horn is noticably louder now, enough so that I don't want a new horn anymore.

    I rotated the horn by loosening its mounting nut so that the outlet is facing downwards just in case there was a risk of collecting any water.

    Can you guys tell me, why would Toyota block the horn with this baffle in the first place? Any reason I can't leave the baffle off and enjoy the louder horn? I never saw another horn with the opening covered like this one was.

    if you rotated them down it should be fine i havent had any problems

    I took mine out almost 4 years ago when I first bought the truck.

    Rain water won't get in there but when I washed my engine bay some water got into the horns and they sounded like shit. I just took them off and emptied them out and they were fine.

    I rotated the horn downward so the "trumpet" is pointing toward the ground and shouldn't be able to collect any water. That's a 10mm wrench on the back of the horn.

    The horn is definitely louder without the cover. My girlfriend could immed tell the difference, and it has to be really obvious for her to notice anything, LOL. Plus, I've installed these type of "snail" horns on my motorcycle and boat before with the horns exposed to the elements with no problems. Best part, took three minutes at a cost of zero dollars and I got the louder horn I was looking for.

    BTW - I'm fairly certain someone on here did a decibel test and there was no difference in the volume of the horns. Just the sound.

    If you have an iPhone, there is an app called "RTA lite", it is a real time analyzer that is free, you can test all the decibels you want to with it.
