2.7L engine power opinions?

I love my 4cyl 4wd! Granted I use 4low pulling my boat out the water on the steep boat ramps to ease the clutch strain.

 

That is great! Thats a good size boat. That makes me feel more happy about getting the 4 cylinder. I had a 1992 4runner 3.0L V6 and it made less horsepower when you consider that. BTW Your truck looks awesome with the TRD wheels and decal! Nice rig with the boat!

 

my 98 2.7 is hard to keep at 70. Little hills and it slows right down. And its std. Uh am i missing something????

 

Thanks for the compliment! I am sure that you will enjoy your tacoma. The 2.7 isnt like most 4cyls. It really make the same power if not more that the 60 degree smaller V6.

 

Just got my 09 Access Cab 4x4 tonight! And although Ive only driven it around my neighborhood for about 15 mins, Im very pleased so far! Its got all the options I want, I find it very comfortable to drive, shifts smooth, fun, and its got more than enough pep (with no load anyway) Its really not as gutless as i had imagined. It reminds my of what the old Toyota pick ups were, the way Toyota started with theyre trucks, 4 cylinders and go forever little bombers.
I need to take some pics as soon as the sun is out again.

 

Good to hear Soundwave! I think you'll be pleased, as over all I have been more than pleased with mine. The only thing I regret is not getting it in 4x4. Hope to see some pictures of that good looking truck!

Just got my Tacoma yesterday and got a break in the weather to take a couple pics. I love the truck! The 2.7 is just perfect for my needs!

 

Just take your time breaking in the engine. To really get it to perform you have to run it up to 4500 rpm or so sometimes depending on gear so don't be dissappointed if it's lugging in higher gears under 2000 rpm. It can stay in 4th on the interstate pushing 80mph if you want it to. I don't usually shift outa 4th till I'm passing 70mph. This thing is geared for the autobahn. If you don't know how to double clutch you should start learning. It's a PIA getting it into first at anything but a crawl without double clutching. Engine is very responsive. I'm wondering how it will be at high altitude on a pass. Think I'll run mine up the local one this summer fun.

 

I pull 3 quads occasionally with my 2wd tacoma, i prob shouldn't but it gets the job done

 

If it's under the load specs I see no reason you shouldn't be towing them. If you don't have a drop hitch I'd get one though.

 

Been thinking of the same thing. Decided I'd just run in 4th gear in that situation. Gets it done.

 

yeah i have a hitch... 3 & 4th gears up the Cajon Pass... i tell you these 2.7's are tough

 

So far I am very pleased. It has a lot more pep than I thought. 90% of my driving will be without a load or trailer so I know I made the right choice with the 4 cylinder. And the 10% of the time when I am towing or hauling I know it will get it done. I don't need V6 power to drive to work or get groceries. Thanks for all the feed back!

Congrats on the new truck Soundwave. You'll like it. I had an '89 Toyota pickup 4x4 regular cab (pre-Tacoma) that I put 220K miles on and then sold to a kid who wanted it badly several years ago.....I regret having done so, but still see the truck around town, it has to be pushing 300K on the odo now. I got an '08 Taco 4x4 regular cab and love it. I've done some towing and it's fine for moderate to light loads. I drove it from western Montana to Minneapolis and back this past summer, hauling a load of furniture/crap out there to my son, and kind of lead-footed it across the northern tier, ran 75-80 mph. Worked fine. Only problem is that mine is a base model and doesn't have cruise-control, and I definitely missed having that on that trip. But 95% of my driving is local short-trip stuff, so I can live without cruise. Anyway, enjoy.....
