Snow in Hawaii

One of my buddies took these shots on the Big Island of Hawaii, a top Mauna Kea. Elevation 13,803 feet.

 

another reason why I want to visit.

Is that rare?

 

no not really. It happens once a year. Maybe some times it has just a little snow, some times a lot.

 

Oh cool!! Nothing to really snowboard on though?

 

if you look at some of the pictures i think there are some tracks. Only thing is you have to dodge some really jagged lava rock some times. So its not for the inexperienced snow boarders.

Been there done that. I lived there for 7 years. Its an awesome experience and I wish I could just pick up and move back. Its a different lifestyle as its more grounded around the OHANA. Wonderful pics, thanks for sharing

 

ha ha ha those trucks look like snow cones! I want a grape Hawaiian Taco cone to go with Frontier sprinkles!

Send those to Al Gore! I want some global warming here in KC. I'm tired of freezing my ass off!

 

BTW, at times the snow is much deeper than whats in those pics. It certainly gets deep enough for snowboarding, skiing, sledding or whatever. That is just a light dusting.

Those pics are actually located on top of a huge volcano dome which is called mauna kea. The volcanos are cool to look at especially when they are errupting and you can see the lava flows.

The military has a park where you can stay overnight at which is located about 100 yards from the edge of a dormant Kilauea volcano. You can walk up to the edge and look down inside and its still smoking. When I stayed there i experienced earthquake trimmers throughout the night. Cool stuff.

 

Hell, yall get more snow than we do here in Atlanta...who knew? Those "up in the clouds" shots are cool as hell. Snowboarding while dodging jagged rock....sounds like a lot of fun!

P.S. Don't eat the so called "lemon" flavored ones!

 

Those sunrise (or sunset) pictures are great! I was also wondering why people filled their trucks with snow, but building a snowman makes sense.

Hawaii's First Astronaut that was killed in the space shuttle. Elison Onizuka... the vistiors center was named after him. The Visitors Center is at the 9000 ft mark.. .



Is is recomended that you stay at the vistors center for at least 30 min to adj to the the altitude and the air pressure before making you way any higher.



The road was closed when we got up the the visitors center at 1030am. they opened it up after they plowed the snow from the road.. it is also rec. that you use a 4x4 to go beyond the vistors center. The road isnt paved!







THe snow was about 4inches thick! and soft!











My Sis Bro Inlaw and me! elijah was cold and the air was thin and he had to go into the car to rest a bit..



Can forget the Hawaiian Style Snow board.. Boogie Board!!!



and us Hawaiians cant leave the top with out bringing back some snow for the kids that couldnt make the trip..
