    Nope. You have to divide (1+2) on both sides, not multiply.

    Since 2(1+3) is not in parenthesis the (1+2) does not reside in the denominator. You rewrite like this:
    6/2 * (1+2) = X =>(divide (1+2))
    6/2 = x/(1+2)
    3 = x/3 => (multiply both sides by 3)
    9=x

    Holy shit this is a long thread. At first I said, duh it's 9.
    6/2(1+2)
    6/2X3
    3X3
    9

    But i really suck at remembering math that i never use in real life. Shortly after I remembered and I think this is how it goes.

    6/2(1+2)
    6/ (2x1 + 2x2)
    6/ (2+4)
    6/6
    1

    Order of operations say do parenthasis first then move left to right if it's all multiplication and division. So you would do the parenthasis first making it.
    6/2(1+2)
    6 / 2 * 3
    6/2 = 3
    3*3 = 9

    He should have his degrees stripped from him, then, for being an utter idiot. My 5th grade niece could do this problem... and she's a girl!

    How many people do you think who said 9 stopped taking math in school when they got to basic algebra?

    probably about 50/50 since this problem requires little to no brain power, and absolutely no algebra.

    ^^ What he said. This problem requires arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division), which is taught in elementary school. Order of operations might not be taught until middle school.

    Either way, EVERYONE should be able to see that the answer is 9. It's really not complicated. Read my post above. It shows what an extra set of parenthesis can do to a problem.

    Parenthesis/brackets are sort of like punctuation. Notice the comma for the following sentences:

    "I need to help my uncle, Jack, off his horse."
    "I need to help my uncle jack off his horse."

    Now look at the following math "sentences":

    6/2(2+1) = 9
    6/[2(2+1)] = 1

    Seriously, plug it into a calculator both ways, and you'll see the difference.

    Go back and edit this. You were correct the first time. If you want to distribute the numbers into the parenthesis, you would multiply "6/2" by "1" and by "2", then sum them.

    Ex:
    =(6/2)(1+2)
    =(6/2) + (12/2)
    =(3) + (6)
    =9
