    6/2(1+2) = ?

    Maybe In Taco terms.....

V6 motor divided by "the Product of (1 happy Taco owner plus 2 more happy Taco owners) times twice as many happy people with Tacos struggling with this equation" ........

    6 / "(1 + 2) x 2"
ya gotta solve the bottom half of the equation before you can do the division..
ya gotta do the addition in the parenthesis before you can do the multiplication on the bottom half

    6 / "3 X 2"
    6 / 6 = 1!!!

    ^^

If it written as a fraction form, with "2(1+2)" as the denominator, then the answer would indeed be 1. However, fractions can be written linearly, too, with proper placement of parenthesis/brackets. In this case, if "2(1+2)" was the denominator, then it needs to be written as:
    =6/(2(1+2)) or
    =6/[2(1+2)] or even
    =6/{2(1+2)}

The part in red doesn't need to be in red, nor do those specific types of brackets/parenthesis have to be used. They are shown for example. The point is that SOME sort of notation is needed to distinguish that "2(1+2)" is a denominator part of the fraction. You can test this by plugging it into your calculator as such.

As written, however, this is plain and simple order of operations from left to right. The answer is thus 9.

    Don't over think this.

Even though its true that he is showing the difference between the different potential formatting of the problem, the question as written follows the second format by definition. So the answer is 9.

Yup, you are correct. However it doesn't mean that the question isn't confusing because of how it's typed/written. It would be very simple if it were hand written or written with the proper spacing and or brackets.

At the speed of light, nothing. Beyond the speed of light, darkness.

Oh and the answer is nine!

Its all just a semantics thing. On a computer / can either be division or indicate a fraction. if it is a fraction x parenthesis the answer is 9. if it is 6 divided by 2 times parenthesis then the answer is 1. Write it out by hand with out using a slash and the answer is obvious. The questions is is that six halves or 6 divided by 2.

^^ If I could rep steve-o twice in a row, I would, for being one of the few logical people dealing with this math problem.

Netmonkey, don't trust that old TI-85. Try it on any new TI calculator and it should be correct.

Hahaha on a funny note, look at all the math on the page behind netmonkey's calculators. Clearly he was busy trying to work it out :)
