Tacoma Fuel Economy

after almost 10,000 miles im still getting over 19 mpg.

 

I put some heavier tires on the truck and gas mileage went way down, 2 mpg. The tires are about the same size that came stock on the truck, there is just so much more tread. Because of the extra weight I noticed a decrease in response as well when I need to really get down the road. Good tires though...

 

why am i only getting 15mpg i mean is my lift and tires killing me that bad?

 

^ Yup, for every pound increase in tire/wheel weight, it's like putting a few pounds in the bed of the truck and driving around with it in there

 

Oh yeah! my96 dropped about 4mpgs when I went from alloy to steelies and c to E load tires in one switch, which was like a 30 pound increase per corner. I think you're doing good to be getting 15 with 35s.

If you don't want to sit through the whole boring lecture stop reading now - and of course if I screw something up, I trust someone to point it out. What I believe:

The ECU adjusts to what the sensors tell the ECU, not to any particular driver or even style of driving. There are typically two types of learning involved - Long Term and Short Term.

Long Term is a data value that changes gradually in response to sensor values based on conditions: fuel oxygen content (i.e., ethanol, cold air intake, etc.), engine wear, air leaks, fuel pressure, altitude, etc. This data is stored in a nonvolatile location in the ECU and is not erased even when the engine is shut down. This information is used during warm up and wide open throttle conditions - also known as Open Loop mode.

Short Term values produce near instantaneous correction values determined from sensors such as the oxygen sensor. Under normal conditions it cycles rapidly around the 0 percent correction value and is only functional during closed loop operation (note: if you watch the operation you can predict oxygen sensor failure by the slow down in response time). This mode is used only during closed loop operation (when engine is up to temp & sensors all report good - NO check engine flags set).

I have no idea how Toyota implements it, but when the short term values, plus or minus, exceed what the ECU expects by some margin, say 10%, it begins to influence the long term stored values, changing them to be closer to optimum. On some ECUs I've seen there is also a three cycles of Cold to Hot requirement before the change is moved into the nonvolatile memory - screwing with these numbers based on a single engine run is not typical.

There are absolute limits to how much the ECU can adjust engine performance given the parameters of the specific engine. That is why, for example, you couldn't switch from gas to 100% ethanol (even if the mechanical parts could handle it).

got back from a trip from NJ to NC and back. my wife (130lb), kid (68lb) 8 yr old, and myself (230lb) with TWO Isuzu 4x4 manual transmissions (175lb each++), and camping gear (tent, air mattress, sleeping bags and cooler with food + clothing). bed was loaded in every square inch, even the pockets in the bedsides were filled. 28.26 mpg going down and 31.09 coming back without the transmissions but with a ARB bumper for my 4x4 in their place......i get 22 around town now, sometimes 20-21 but rarely. i love my Tacoma

 

Extra rotational mass in the tires is a lot different than extra weight in the bed.

I got similar results as you on a recent road trip. 30.0 MPG's on the way down hauling outdoor furniture. 28.5 on the way back empty (but with more traffic and more speed ). ~570 miles one way.

 

I got 28 MPG on my last tank. 2.7 - 4X2.

 

im getting about 18.75mpg with my 2.7 5speed. i put bigger and heavier tire (went from stock steels and HT tires to FJ wheels and ATs) im happy with it i guess. i dont know if the AT are really worth it for around town driving.

 

Hey guys, just come back from a trip to Atlanta and I got 19.6 MPG
2010 with my TRD Sport, AUTO, 4 doors, Long bed, 20K miles, 4x4. Truck was empty, only me, going 75mph as much as I could.

still get 21-23 around town. lowest i got was 19 and i was driving around town during Xmas (mall capital of the world Paramus NJ has more malls per square mile....UGH) on winter blend fuel....lots of traffic. 4x2 AC 5 spd 2.7L running full Mobil 1 synthetic 0w20. love the truck!!!!!!!! if i do mixed im getting 24-26 MIXED...straight highway 28- and UP. if i have ANYTHING in the OPEN bed the MPG suffers, but my tonneau cover got me 30+ as seen in my last post. One trip from NJ to NC with a table saw and sheet metal in the open bed, i got 25 mpg. coming back 30 empty no cover, about 300lbs total in bed going down. wind drag plays a major part in MPG on these trucks. Screw Mythbusters saying toneaus dont help....they DO. remember i got 31.09 coming back LOADED with my wife, kid, ARB style bumper and camping gear with the cover ON. i want to see what i get with no weight in the bed, cover on.

 

I got 16.33 MPG last time I put gas. I have 3 inch lift with 33'' duractracs and demello sliders. Magnaflow muffler and drop in AFE air filter. If I wanted great MPG I would've bought a 4Cyl.

 

My scan gauge said I was getting 9999MPG today when I was coasting down hill off the highway

 

My 2011 Tacoma v6 gets worse gas mileage than my 2005 Tacoma v6 did. With the same 20" wheels. My 05 was averaging around 18-19mpg. My 2011 driving like I did the 05 gets 15-16 mpg. Driving it cautiously with some hyper miling thrown in, I'm gettin 17-17.5mpg.

Also I think my 05 had more power than the 2011.

 

Had my V6 6 speed manual for about 3 months now, averaging 18+ in town and 21 on the road........
