Locking Diff add on

i have had numerous tacomas since the very first model but i just recently bought an 09 sport package 4x4 which didn't come with a rear locking diff. is it possible to have this added on without too much trouble, cost ect?

 

i thought all the trd sports came with that? I'd like to do it to my truck but I'm thinking it will be expensive.

My 2008 trd has it but only works in 4wd low i have been told

 

they stopped that in '09 on the sports.

 

they might have a mod for that like they do the 1st generations gray wire mod.

 

yeah for sure! What's the point of the sport anymore? I'm really considering looking for a dc sb with trd or and an auto but its hard to think of trading mine in. Of course I'd take some of my stuff and put it on the new one. Either that or I'm going to do arb air lockers f&r.

 

some people like the looks of the sport, like me. the inverter comes in handy for construction sites and comes on offroad versions as well. The sport also comes with the back up camera which is quite useful in tight city parking. if all you get is a locking dif over the sport then why bother, some of us spend 99% of our time on the road and don't need the locking dif. Plus, you can get the locking dif the price of a hoodscoop painted...if the situation were to ever arise i could slap a locker in there a lot easier than finding a hood and having it painted and having it all match.

 

There are many different aftermarket lockers or Limited slip devices you can buy and have installed in your rear diff.

BUT - since you have the AUTO LSD which utilizes the braking/ABS system - you have to be careful which locker/LSD you buy. If you get something that's always engaged (so to speak), it could create some confusion for your AUTO LSD system and make for some interesting driving characteristics in certain situations. That's probably why Toyota stopped installing the mechanical LSD's in the trucks with the AUTO LSD.

Ultimately - a selectable locker like the ARB would be the best, as you can engage & disengage it whenever you want.

 

Have you actually tried to use the stock inverter with power tools? So far, all I've gotten it to do without tripping the "breaker" is power my laptop...

 

its 400 watts, so that should be good for a little over 3 amps. most power tools are 5+ amps. I used it yesterday while changing my electrical panel at home. I ran an extension cord and plugged in some drop lights.

I've used it to charge my drill batteries while out in the field where there were no other outlets. would work well for tailgating and having a tv setup or mini fridge. I will eventually look into getting a bigger inverter if I have the money and time. if I can stuff 1000 watter in there, i should be able to hammer drill and saw off of it.

 

I've been looking at Aussie lockers lately, ~$225. I'm sure you could disable the Auto LSD somehow.

 

True - I've charged my drill baterries too now that I think of it...

Any clue if a dremel will run off of it?

 

It took me 3 weeks to make a pot of coffee out fishing off the beach. Turns out it was a 900 watt coffee pot but we did eventually drink luke warm coffee.

 

the 400 series xpr is listed as Amperage 2.0 Amps. So yes, you could use it.

the 300 series is listed as Amperage 1.15 Amps.

just make sure if you are ever using a long extension cord to use one with 14/12ga. The longer the cord, the more the voltage drop and the more amps it tries to draw with the smaller wires. might not be as noticeable on a 3 volt tool, but it could be enough to trip the breaker.
