AND the gas, 2.7 Liter 2TR-FE, the exact inline four in my truck :D

usually for full race applications they will remove the balance shaft(s) to squeeze more power out of the motor, leading to increased vibrations and more re-torquing. but at that point no matter what type of cylinder configuration, vibration becomes an issue and must be addressed properly.

Drag racing is hardly exemplary of engine durability; four or five runs would be great out of a build but 1/4 mile is the best they get at times.

But it can illustrate what can go wrong... and how badly... on a very shortened time/miles scale.

I think they both are an excellent engine. This is not like the previous years when people debated this and Toyota only had the 22RE, 3.slo v6, and then finally came along the 3.4l V6. Everyone knows the 4cylinders were the better choice when the 3.0 came out and the best choice when it finally arrived was the 3.4l. With the engine options and technology we have today, honestly both should last well over 100k. These trucks and their engines should be able to last a long while. the 4.0 is very powerful when coupled with a supercharger, and still very peppy without. I test drove the 4cylinder, and it felt exactly like that, a 4cylinder. Still was pleased with it performance and if that is what I needed specifically out of my vehicle I would have been okay with that too.

Well I got the 2000 2.7 and it has 195,8xx miles on it. All I ever did was change the oil, air filter, exhaust manifold, and plugs in it. It's hard to say anything bad about it. It's been an excellent engine. Next one will be the v6 for a little more pep with the towing though.

Although we don't hammer our engines too hard (going back to 1986), never had an engine problem other than a recall on the '94 4 Runner 3.0 V6 Head Gasket. Never had a drop of oil from one of them...change the oil every 3K miles and they'll last forever.

I had a 84 and 85 4runner both with the 22r's. Loved the motors sold the one with almost 500,000kms with only having to replace the timing chain. Great motor.

When I bought my 96 Tacoma, I didn't even think twice, I went for the 2.7l.
I must say, as much as a tried to convince myself that I was happy with the 4 banger, I wasn't.
The head cracked at 300,000kms which was a disappointment (and expensive) and I always found the truck underpowered and hard on gas. The 2.7 just didn't seem to have the heart the 22r's did.

Is the 4.0l a better engine, who knows, but to me it sure is much more satisfying to drive, and not noticeably harder on gas from what I can tell.

only if toyota made an Inline six that were in the supra's just make it a little more beefy to be suitable for a truck and on the plus side those engines can handle alot of power and abuse!

The 2JZ-GTE found in TT Supras does not need extra beef for anything. That motor was a text book lesson in how to over engineer a motor. They made it in vogue to make 700+ hp on a stock longblock.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
idk much about Toyota I4 motors but all I know is that they have the reputation for being the toughest, longest lasting I4 engine ever made. I love mine although if feels a bit underpowered pulling steep grades and I have to shift down to 4th quite often which sucks but oh well it is a great engine and should last a long time.

Ah I hear ya. A four liter 2JZ would be tits for our trucks. Better have your wallet ready, if you want a MKIV. Even the non turbos are pulling 20K+ if they are clean. A friend of mine bought a Royal Sapphire Pearl one for 35K. It had only about 15K miles though.

If I am not mistaken Toyota did make a truck with turbo motor in it. I think it was the 22RTE 4cyl. Supposedly pretty stout motor too.

The thing is , they both have the same stroke, nearly the same bore and same hp/liter,for all intents and purposes.

What I wonder is if they share any common parts that could indicate that they are the same spec and design, just one with 4 , the other with 6 cylinders. That would make this all irrelevent.... or more so than it is. There is a cummins 3.9 4 cylinder based on the older block of the famous 5.9l for example.

OK, I'm not gonna rewrite what i said. I got to typing and not thinking, totally forgot the obvious nature of inline and "V" , i submit to your literary crucifxions. Lemme have another beer first though.

What is your point? HD's V-twin came out in 1909 and it is very simple technology.

We have 92k on our '05 4Runner and it runs quiet and burns no oil.

wtf my friend picked his N/A supra for $11K....and it was pretty clean...

i can see paying that kind of price for one with only 15K, but still they aren't that expensive...yet. and i know for a fact that the prices for a supra down here are on the order of anywhere from $2-$5K more than a car on the mainland would get.

or you could just smuggle one over from JDM land. friend just picked up a twin turbo one for $2300 USD. herra jellies.

The facts behind why I believe Toyota's 2TR-FE inline four cylinder is tougher and more dependable than the 1GR-FE six cylinder.

    1. 2TRs are used throughout the world in many different vehicle applications, with GVWs of over 6,000 lbs. They are relied on in the Hilux, HiAce, Fortuner, Land Cruiser Prado as well as many other global platforms.

    2. Iron block, versus the 1GR with an aluminum block. Better for boost, much thick as hell cylinder walls and simple design.

    3. Lower compressions ratio, 9.6:1 vs. 10:1 in the 1GR-FE.

    4. Forged connecting rods. Simply awesomeness.

    5. R155(F) Transmission-155 isn't too far away from 154, right? :p
