CB install Help

Recently purchased a Cb from a thrift store, don't know the exact model, but it has the little GE symbol on it. Just couldn't pass it up for $10. I have looked and searched around to find how to install it, but no luck. all I need to know is the black and red wires coming from it, which one goes to a ground and which one needs power? Also, I helped my stepdad install his on his FJ a while back, and we had to put in a Add-a-fuse. Will I need to do this on the Tacoma as well?Any advice will be helpful. Thank you.

 

Great thanks! should I tie the power into an existing power line? or run a line to the battery?

 

red is hot, black is ground. you may also want to run it through a relay to a switched power source (i.e. clock) so that you can't accidentally leave it on and drain your battery when you turn the truck off.

well it's not so much a power "bleed," it's just that i could see myself accidentally leaving the cb switched on, so i put a relay in so that even if the cb is left switched on, it will turn off when i turn off the key in the truck.

Makes the CB wiring a breeze. It's a $10 CB, no worries, plenty of power coming off of those accessory taps and it's already factory fused and well grounded.

 

hahaha I know, I know. I even took an electronics class in high school..shows how much I was paying attention.

 

Dang that would take me a whole less than five minutes. And the CB would be able to be unplugged and moved out the way if needed. Thanks for the help dude!!

 

Yeah when I helped my stepdad with his in the FJ we didn't ground it properly and had to tear the console off again. To ground the antenna can't I just bolt the mounting plate to the bed? How did you ground it?

 

Yup, no problem. I have had one of those powering my CB for the past 10 yrs. With my $50 Uniden and good Firestik antenna I can talk 10 miles.

Keep your coaxial antenna wire as short as possible and buy a tunable tip antenna (firestik). Use a swr meter to tune it in.

You'll have more money in the antenna,cable and mount that you paid for the CB,,but that is the biggest part of the battle.

 

My stepdad said that the wire from antenna to CB NEEDS to be 19ft. I don't know why at the moment, but he said that. Yes, I plan on going to 4wheelparts for Firestik and mount. Thanks I'll make sure I check that out this weekend when I wire it up. haha yeah I know, but it will be worth be able to talk when im stranded in the mountains. Where did you mount your cb? I am 6'5 and I hit my break controller all the time, would like to see where you put yours.

 

i have 2 ten inch subs in my backseat and i wired it into my amp and it runs fine and doesnt pull any power from my subs
