2009 front end bang noise

ok i have a 09 d.c. with 5100's @ 2.5 stock springs and a 2" aal in rear
lately i have been hearing a bang or a clank or clunk noise only when i am parking ...the noise is up front happens when i am in reverse & drive and sometimes when turning the wheel while parking prety much only when parking or un parking,,,,
any ideas and yes i check the ball joints and wheel bearings and lug nuts
any help

 

I had a problem similar to this. It turned out to be that the alignment cams on the lower control arms were not torqued right.

 

anyone else have some input???

 

I'm hearing a very loud 'banging' noise from my drivers side. The UCA's seem to be really tight, how can I tell if the LCA's were not torqued right? If I just tighten them, will this effect my alignment?

Yeah, Icon stage 3. Coilover set at about 2.25" in the front.

From day 1 I've had this noise upfront, but its seems worse lately and I need to get it addressed. I've tightened everything on the UCA and the shock itself, and its all nice and tight. The only thing I can think of now (from researching this site) is the LCA or the Cv joints? Not sure how to look into this, other then making sure everything is tight there. Not sure how to tell if my CV joint is bad? Also, I don't want to go to town and tighten something that will effect my alignment...

 

well if it makes you feel better my truck has been making this noise for well over a year now and i use the heck out of it.....and noting has broken yet....
as you have done i have checked everything to no end.........
i have a few things i think are causing miine......
1.....tie rod ends are flopping around.."everyone tell me its ok but no one elses move a freely as mine do......

2. ....cv half shafts.....mine seen to have a bit of play in them.........

 

Sway bar isn't contacting the coil ?

The noise is getting louder now, I'm just worried something will break while I'm driving and could cause an accident or something

 

Have you recently rotated your tires? I had a wheel balancing weight hit my sway bar when turning at low speeds. It drove me crazy.

I had the same problem, everything tight, checked 10 times. I eventually figured it was noise from the play in my CV (it sounded very similar to when I moved the CV with my hand).

Oddly enough, it was being casued by my SAW coilover. For whatever reason, my drivers side CO was extremly low on nitrogen pressure (like 100psi low). I had the COs nitorgen refilled back to SAW specs and the noise disappeared immediately. Fine, and quieter ever since... not to mention my ride was greatly improved. You'll need (or need to borrow) a zero-loss gauge to check the nitrogen pressure.

 

Is that possible to check on the Icon coilovers? How do I check the pressure?

 

i think its the lca camber cams. my 4runner does this to. i have to get it checked out asap. were your cams frozen? Easy alighnment?

 

I've never even seen a set of ICONs in person... but if they are (N) pressurized there should be a valve on there, like on a tire, that the (N) is filled/released from. My SAWs have it right on the top, shrader valve like on a tire or innertube.

Checking it is tricky. it should probably be in the neighborhood of 200psi but we're talking about 200psi in a space half the size of a soda can; by the time you press in the valve stem you've already let out 50psi... the only way to not lose any (N) while checking the pressure is to use a fancy pressure gauge called a 'no loss gauge', which does just what is claims: checks the pressure without consuming any of the gas/air/whatever to turn the needle.

Since I don't race, and presumabley you don't either, just have the tech refilling the (N) to set the regulator to your desired PSI. It won't be exact but close enough; probably within 10psi plus or minus. I always use this technique on my dirtbike shocks, and unless you are a suspension expert you'll never know the difference of being 10psi off, especially in a truck. If you do want it exact, find a shop that has a no loss gauge: I have a really good offroad racing suspension expert fairly close, he has all the gadgets, it took all of 15 minutes and $20. Typically, a shop will charge anywhere from $20 to $40 per shock and it is done with them on the truck. The the shock needs to be unweighted, ie tire off the ground not via the LCA. Once (N) in it can never go bad, not affected by temps, and maintains the same density... it can leak out from damage, or if you let it out.

I'm not sure why my 1 CO was almost empty. I can speculate that it came that way (I never bothered to check) or that at one of my tire rotations or something, a mechanic was like "what's this" and tapped the valve stem, letting out most of the pressure with a single tap.

 

It's your ball joints. On my s10 I cranked the torsion bars and the lift i had gave it extreme angles on the CV and wore out y balljoints way quicker. Jack up the front of your truck and grab the tire, top and bottom and kind of rock it, if it moves and kind of 'clunks' around then its your balljoints. Thats what my guess is.

It is also very common to have a popping noise or mettalic knock from your front end coming from your brake pads. They are a floating pad by design so when you change direction ( forward to reverse) they slide back and forth.

Try and recreate this by rolling forward and hitting the brakes. Roll back and hit the brakes. If it pops then this is the noise youre hearing. If not then I cant help you.

I have that same noise and Im telling myself it is this because its normal. I have a 2011 so I cant believe that its my CV's or ball joints.

 

Anyone come up with any solutions ? I have the same noise and it really pisses me off I have been under the truck three times tightening shit and its still there. Turning to the right mostly and going over bumps. Sounds like someone is hitting a piece of metal with a hammer.
