Anyone get the random popping noise?

any update on this issue?

 

My 07 Offroad makes a noise once in a while when I back out of the driveway in reverse. The driveway is at a bit of a slope... If I roll backward in neutral first, stop, then put it into reverse it doesn't happen. I always just figured it was the drive-line or automatic transmission engaging and never gave it much thought.

 

mine was doing this a couple weeks back i could not tell what it was. Well I went under the truck and noticed a screw on my skid plate missing so I think it was just that banging up and down. I tightened it up but have not really checked for the popping yet.

 

I had a popping/clunking from the front end on reversing and some turning a little bit ago. Turned out to be a loose bolt on the lower control arm. I didnt pay attention to it and sure enough the LCA broke while driving. check those out just for precautionary measures

 

Hi guys, New here. I just bought an '04 DblCab Tacoma Prerunner. I've noticed the same noise when I back out of my driveway or have to turn the wheel to back out of a tight parking spot. I also noticed today that if I have to brake suddenly, when I get back on the gas it will do the same thing. It doesn't do it everytime, but often enough for me to be concerned.

 

Update...sound is still here, I tried pin-pointing it again last night with no luck. I had my sister back up the truck and pull it forward a few times to see if I could find it..No luck. I backed the truck up and forward a few times and she couldn't pinpoint it either.

I checked the LCA bolts and they are tight. I'm wondering if its one of the mounts to my front diff or something.

 

Any update? I think I may have the same noise, and my LCA bolts are tight too...

 

It may be the inner cv joint. Usually it'll only make a pop sound if u accelerate or decelerate or goin over a bump. Mines was doin that a few weeks ago n I change them n problem was solved. Let me know if this helped at all mahaloz

 

A CV joint would make a continous popping noise. Mine only pops once. for example..put the truck in first...ease off the clutch...POP...then keep moving. Put it in reverse...ease off the clutch...POP. or if I'm inching along in traffic and I abruptly push in the clutch and unload the drivetrain...POP then if I abruptly give it gas it will pop again.

 

Mine makes the popping noise too. Only when I first get going in the morning when I turn the wheels coming out of the driveway. I have checked everything on the front twice and it is tight. I have the Total Chaos UCAs and Bilsteins on the front. Any updates on a cause or fix ?

 

I have a bang/popping noise on the drivers side too. How can I tell if its the CV joint? Also can I just tighten everything on the LCA, or will I change the alignment?

Nothing has fallen off yet so I suppose I just have to continue to deal with it.

 

Got the same single "hollow" pop sound when moving very slowly in either direction- any more info on this?

 

Had this issue finally occur some years ago. Discovered it was the lower control arm bushings. They are pressed into the arm from the factory and may become loose. Tightening the bolts does not help. Only way to tell is point a camera at them and make some turns backing up and pulling forward. Nothing you can do to fix it permanently except buy new arms or replace the bushings with poly replacements and it's a bitch.

 

Original brakes? The factory brakes are notorious for making noise once they are all dried up when changing direction of travel. The pins in there that hold the upper and lower part of them supposedly wear out over time. The fact that they aren't held in there very well in the first place due to the lack of an upper brake retention spring doesn't help either. I used to get horrid clunking before I swapped out my brakes. Once I did the swap out and added proper lube to the pins then added an upper retention spring as they should had come from the factory (but did not) the clacking went away for good.

If it is coming from your rear end check your u bolts to make sure they are tight, they come a bit under torqued from the factory. Additionally, you could check your center pins on the leaf springs to make sure they are tight. If all of that is good and it is indeed coming from your rear, I would consider axle wrap as suspect.

 

I too am chasing a clunk/clank. Only started after lift install. Mine also did the brake pad shifting noise, but that"s not it, it's something different and louder. I've went over all suspension components and everything is as it should be. I'm thinking it's this in the video attached.

That sounds like brake pad float.
