TRD Worth It?

I plan on buying a tacoma within the next year and have a couple questions.

I'll mainly use the truck as a daily driver, but it will also be used for hunting, light hauling, and getting me to trailheads for backpacking/hunting (some 4X4 "jeep" roads). My main question is whether the TRD off road package is worth it? I like the SR5 package, but beyond that I'm lost.

How's the 4 cylinder in this truck? I test drove two auto 6's and one manual 6, but haven't taken a 4 out yet. Would it be able to handle some light hauling i.e. mulch/small boat or trailer without killing it?

 

welcome to TW! if you plan on doing hardcore stuff and plan on upgrading the suspension to aftermarket then a sr5 is fine. but if u want a good suspension and dont plan on upgrading, then the trd is worth it. it all depends on what u wanna use the truck for

 

My 4 cyl is too slow off the line IMO. If you can afford the V6, go for it. Extra power is always nice and the truck will be more desireable if and when you go to sell it. JMO.

From one hunter to another I have the TRD OR, and have been 100% happy with it. Takes me where I need to go plus it hauls all my stuff in and extras out.
Before I got the MOD bug, I put it through the tests, performance was what I wanted.
I am sure other will chime in on this, think long and hard, you will find what you are looking for.

yes the TRD is worthy it u get the nice vented mesh netted bucket seats which feel like a luxary car seat im a valet so i know haha they are way nicer seats than the standard crappy cloth seats the normal sr5 offers also u get great bilstein shock and a arms and not to mention the POWER OUTLET IN the bed which is great u can power large flood lights vacumes even a vaporizor if u have the kronic haha but yea go for the TRD unless u plan on fabbing it right when u get it

 

I wouldent get anything but a trd, i have 2 tacomas both trd's 06 and an 09, and today i talked the dealer down on a 38,000 tundra to 27 grand so i may trade my 06 on a new red tundra TRD.

Sounds like for your needs, yes, it is worth it. For someone like me who rarely goes off road, no, it isn't.

My first Toyota was an '85 SR5 extended cab. 4 cyl, 4wd, the "sport" package as I recall. Roughest riding truck I've ever been in, and underpowered, but I came to love it. It was my second car, not my DD.

When I upgraded trucks in 2001 I chose the 4 door TRD Off-Road, and I loved that truck also. Besides becoming my DD, I used it for hunting and fishing, and light hauling with my utility trailer. Even flat-towed my Jeep CJ-5 with it a few times.

New truck is again a Double Cab TRD Off-Road. I'm sold on 'em, and I especially like the '09 because of the larger V-6 option and the towing package. It's comfortable enough to be a DD, yet tough enough for the outdoors. I don't "wheel" but I've been on some rough roads with these TRD's. So far, I've never needed chains, either!

 

For me, no, it's not worth the extra. The biggest advantage of the TRD, in my opinion, is the locking differential. I've never been in a situation where I've needed a locked diff, which is why I didn't get the TRD.

 

The SR5 should be plenty for your wheeling needs. Like I've said before, if you've never had a locker, you won't miss having a locker. I've had jeeps with lockers in the past and wouldn't even consider not having one on a truck, that's why I went TRD OR. I almost just went SR5 and would have put an ARB in the rear, but the TRD had some other stuff I liked so I just went factory locker. If you plan on light towing the 4 could probably do it, but the 6auto gpm is close to that of a 4manual soo...
