TRD, SR5, or both?

I'm looking at custom building a Tacoma Access Cab V6 sometime in the next 6 months, and I am wondering what the advantages are of the TRD Sport package and the SR5 package. Which one should I get, or should I get both?

 

Best thing to do is go on Toyota.com and compare the packages. See if the TRD packages add what you want after the SR5. If you get a TRD, it includes the SR5 stuff.

The TRD off road not the sport is a worthwhile investment if you plan to go off road. It has a selectable locker. A truck with a locking differential will out wheel any similar truck without one.

If it will be street use only the TRD Sport is primarily an appearance package. Yes the shocks are different, but not worth the dough in my opinion. The fake hood scoop is probably the best part of the sport package, but I'd rather have a real locker than a fake scoop any day, even on a truck that was for street use primarily. A locker could help get you unstuck. The fake scoop is only good for looks, catching bugs, and increasing aerodynamic drag. Aerodynamic drag burns gasoline, so I would reccommend an SR5 if you are going street, and the TRD off road if you want to go further.

If you are the slam it to the ground type the X-Runner would be a great place to start. If you are a wheeler or want to be do not let the dealer sell you a truck without the locker. An electric locker with a factory warrantee is a beautiful thing even on a PreRunner(read 2 wheel drive).

A stock PreRunner with the OR package locker would probably go almost anywhere a 4X4 without the locker could go. Driver skill would be important, but the same number of tires are pushing a locked 4X2 as are pushing an open 4X4.

Some folks need a hood scoop to make up for lacking in other area's, is my guess.

Seriously, go with what you like. I think a hood scoop on a truck looks ridiculous, hence the reason I didn't buy the Sport package. The only thing I wanted out of the entire package was steering wheel controls so I couldn't justify the cost difference over the SR5 just for that. There's nothing wrong with the Sport if it's your cup of tea but for off road purposes there's simply no reason to buy one over the OR, IMO.

 

I have a 2007 TRD Sport and it came with a posi rearend. The thing I didn't like about the TRD OR was the electric locker can only be used in the low range. If you put it into high range, it disconnected the locker. Since I primarily use my Taco for the street, I went with the posi rearend.

We just had a big snow storm here in Seattle and the posi with the 4 WD was excellent!!!! Besides I also like the looks of the Sport

I don't know about the 2009s though. I looked at the Toyota site and it didn't say anything about the posi rearend.

 

Are you gonna buy new wheels and tires? Are you gonna replace the shocks? DO you want a long bed? The way I see it, many people replace those items anyway so why pay top dollar and then turn around and replace the crap you just paid top dollar for????

I got an SR5 4x4 LB with the crappy azz steel wheels. I just put the step bars on. WHeels are next. Lift will most likely be after that. And then brush guard. And then I will have a truck that looks different from anyone elses.

Whoever said a 4x2 with a locker will take you any place a 4x4 without it.....I would happily take you up on that. Deep sand and you are stuck like chuck....."....driven skillfully....."......I can drive a Honda Accord "skillfully" and keep from getting stuck.....part of that skill is avoiding the deep stuff. In a 4x4(open or not) you can just mindlessly chug right on through. I do it all the time in my open 4x4 with the crappiest tires on the planet.
