Do any of you guys change the oil weight after 100000 miles? Ill be there my next oil change and Im thinking about using 10w30 instead of 5w30. would the added thickness be bad for the oil pump?

The only difference between oil weights is the thickness of the oil. Sometimes i run 10w in the summer and 5w in the winter. Oil likes to get thicker in the cold so 5w runs easier in the winter.

Toyota probably tested the truck in harsher climates than you have in CA. They decided on 5W-30, I would trust them.

Use synthetic. It's more stable over a wider range of temps. Stick with what Toyota recommends for the temp ranges you expect to drive.

Stick to what your engine was designed and engineered to run in it!

Theres a reason they spend millions of dollars on testing and engineering.

198000 miles on 5w30. No oil consumption. I'm sticking with the stock weight with results like that!

I see your in CA. I certainly would envision no problems if you did go with a minor change like 10w-30. When was the last time you ever had a start below 32 degrees? I know you have the mountains nearby with snow & all. Here in the cold I often go with synthetic in the Winter & back to conventional in the Summer.

I know were not suppose to put thought into all this, just blindly follow the book to handle the 'averages'. That said there is a big difference between cold starting at 10 or more below zero & summer averages of 65+.

If you change your oil at the recommended intervals, 5W30 has the same thickness as 10W30 once the oil reaches operating temperature. 5W30 is thinner when the engine is cold, so it flows easier at startup. There's basically no reason to go with 10W30 if 5W30 is available...

As am automotive repair student I can tell you what we learned. The reason for the manufacture choosing the weight has everything to do on how the oil performed in certain areas of the engine due to the clearance of that engine. The oil supports all of the weight of the crank as it spins. It supports the camshafts as it spins. Both areas will fail if the wrong weight is used over a long period of time. Also the oil has to "hold" to the cylinder walls and a small amount gets burned in the process. Wrong weight in this area will cause piston slap and ring wear or even failing emissions.
so stick to the weight listed.
