Man bro, I am in the same boat as you. I'm a computer geek and light car mechanic and I've been thro this many times with the in-laws. They would never ask me directly but always ask through my wife which would bring it up. But luckily for me my wife also understand how I feel. She knows that if I am not asked directly I wouldn't give a fawk. So my wife would always tell them to ask me directly which always end up not being ever ask so they end up finding someone else to fix it. So I voted no. But it's a catch 22 for you. I stand my ground.

Originally not Expo AF! Kinda Expo AF now...lame.
Instead of just letting the moment pass, I typically interject with. "I can look at that, but my boss specifically says no moonlighting, and will have to charge you x dollars per hour like everyone else. I can probably knock a few hours off, but my boss is very strict about this."

I work in the computer field and get these all the time.

Just because they are family does not mean my time has no value. If you tie me up, you pay for me, just like anyone else. I'll be glad to fix it for whatever the going rate is, but that normally runs them off anyways because they want it done free.

I voted fix it because if you dont, you're opening a huge can of worms with your wife. She'll continue to argue that you dont like her family or some shit like that most likely because women over exagerate. Im on your side when you say other people are actual adults and I personally wouldnt give her the time of day due to her lifestyle and how she acts. But by not doing it, you're digging a 6 foot hole.

Its family. A light could go on in her head 2 years from now where she gets her crap together and then you and your wife fall on times and might need a favor from her.

Setting boundries with women is a very difficult process. They are ever changing oceans of emotions that believe they are "right" in that moment of time. Every moment changes so every emotional change is right.

You should ask the sister directly if she wants you to fix the car. If she says no then you are done with it. If she says yes, then tell her that your time is valuable, because it is, and you will charge her for your time. If she agrees then do the work to the best of your ability. This way you are not feeling used. If your wife does not like your solution, tell her that time spent with her is more important than time spent working on her sister's car, a premium, must be charged to take you away from her.

^^ I can't help but find this approach extremely demeaning and somewhat misogynistic. Women are not some other species. If you have to use some lame ass line like "My time with you is more important and worth money" then your relationship sucks or your wife is a dud.
