Yeah, my father called them ice boxes and ice chests.

A refridgerator is in your kitchen (uses electricity). It is a new version of an ice box.

A cooler plugs into your cigarette lighter and keeps your beer and sandwiches cold for the game. It is a new version of an ice chest.

It is kind like some one saying "I want a coke." and someone else saying "ok, what kind?"...

It is a soda - not a Coke. Just because Coca-Cola originated in the South (and is the TRUE soda), it does not mean that all others are a Coke. Coke is Coca-Cola. Dr Pepper is Dr Pepper. Sprite is Sprite. Mountain Dew is radioactive. :p

    They are all soda.

The word "soda" is acceptable, however, the word "coke" is the correct word when speaking about any soft drink, thats a well known fact. The word "pop" is completely un-acceptable and makes me want to beat the yankee sh!t out of anyone that says it. "i'd like a pop please"..... how gay is that!

Oh wait...You don't particularly care for folk from Texas.
So I suppose you wouldn't give exception to the term "Soda Water". :D

All things being equal... I find the term quite odd myself. :)

Pop and ice-chest are the correct terms. I travel quite a bit and it really irritates me when someone refers to all "pop" as coke. It's just wrong. :boink:

"Pop" is midwestern. Texans call the generic soft drink a coke. I'm a Dr. Pepper man myself (the original recipe from Dublin, if you please) and I'm not offended if someone asks me if I want a coke and I answer "yes, Dr. Pepper please."

It's like kleenex. Do you ask for a facial tissue, or a kleenex? And if you ask for a kleenex and someone gives you some other brand, do you complain? Or band-aids?

Out of curiosity, what do folks in the other part of the country call those insulated beverage holders? The form fitting ones? I've gotten some funny looks when I used the term koozie.

At the risk of agreeing with a Texan...koozie is the proper term.

Also, has anyone asked for a cotton-tipped-swab lately, or do you just ask for a Q-Tip?

ND, while you are all aware that I am Virginian by birth, I have been stuck with the Yankees up here in Jersey for quite some time, and the term pop is as hated here as it is in the south. I think sawdust is right and pop is from the Mid-west. What are those mid-western type people anyway? They are not Southern, they are not Yankee, they are not real Westerners, Hell they're not even Texan. They must just be the crap left over, with the pop and grinders and other such stupid words.

Sawdust, while I've heard the term koozie used for the insulated beverage holders, and it does not offend me to hear it. I think they are called can coolers (which is kind of stupid if you think about it as it does not cool the can, it simply keeps it from getting warm as fast) But anyway, the sign over them at most of the campgrounds we have been to this year says can cooler. (We started collecting one of those or a shot glass from each place we camp.)

Midwestern people are a bunch of pretentious pricks with nothing better to do but make you wonder why they say "pop". They enjoy the occasional giggle at why this would be an argument due to the fact the only thing in the midwest is corn. So they make stuff up to annoy the rest of the world like "pop" I know this first hand as I live in Ohio. There is nothing to do for the most part except for thinking up stupid words and look at corn, lots and lots of corn.
As far as the Koozie thing yes I see them referred to as koozies quite often in fact when I go on scuba trips I try and get a new one at every dive shop I go to and majority call them koozies. Maybe that came out of the midwest as well. Damn you Great Lakes states, DAMN YOU TO HELL!!!!

    Terms I use:

Soda (lived in Colorado long enough to stop calling it all "Coke" - I love Dr. Pepper too)
Q-Tip (also known as grey-haired people - my mom calls herself a Q-Tip)
Tissue (Kleenex is a brand, but I don't discriminate)
Fuel (There is a difference between Gasoline and Diesel)
Band-Aid (Err... I don't know what else to call it - it's the original)
