dual fuel tanks?

gas is lighter then water. at only 6lbs a gallon. the extra weight of the 10 extra gallons is not an issue at all. good luck noticing the gas change.

Driving around with an extra 150lb of gas will change your mpg a bit.

That Long Ranger is pretty interesting. Getting one shipped to the US would have to be a pricey undertaking though (unless they have a US distributor).

I would be interested in even a smaller (say 10 gal or something similar) aux tank. I am surprised that with the popularity of Tacomas with the off-roading crowd that this isn't something more readily available.

 

Actually, shipping from Australia is cheap; once it gets here you get screwed.

a pint is a pound the world around. a 60 gallon tank would add a substantial amount of weight to the truck. it depends on your needs if you do alot of long hauls it might be worth while, but 2 5 gallon jerry cans is a better choice imho its way cheaper and you can lose them for when your not driving across the country lol.

 

Keep in mind the tank itself will weigh a bit too, not just the extra fuel

 

that tank is about 80lbs. although not sure how much the factory one weighs to compare...

If you put the spare tire in the bed or on a bracket off the back then a tank from any full size Jimmy or Blazer(1973-1991) will fit in there and you could use the skid plate that comes with them as well. As to switching back and forth, there are switches used on dual tank motorhomes that switch everything over between tanks(power for pump, sending unit, gas and return lines). Might also want to look at the old saddle tanks on a short box chevy.

 

Have you ever thought about a marine fuel tank? Yes they are stainless steel and expensive, but you could probably get one custom made if you wanna fit it under the truck. You are going to have to buy an expensive fuel pump and drill some holes (I dunno how comfortable you are with that).

I've thought about this and if you put it in the bed you could just use gravity and let that magical force fill your existing fuel tank until the one in your bed is empty.

You could split the fill-up hose that connects to existing tank with the one in the bed with a one way Y-valve and there you go no pumps or switches needed.

The bed tank would also be out of the way from potential hazards like rocks and tree stumps.

In reality I would just buy some Rotopax and attach them to the bed rails and call it a day. Put them in when you need them, take them out when you don't.
