So I joined the Montana 4x4 Association tonight hoping to get more info from some of the members there...but they're very picky about who they let in so I have to wait to receive my approval email before I can post on the forum...

In the meantime...the main areas that I am concentrating on are:

Basin/Boulder - the MT 4x4 Assoc held their Divide Ride up there a couple of years ago and it sounded like that had some interesting terrain, lots of variety, etc. I'm really hoping that I get more info from them because I think we could find something to satisfy everyone up there but I've never spent much time in that area myself.

Copper Creek/ East Fork Resevoir (SW of Georgetown Lake) - I used to camp in this area and there are some old logging roads and roads to mining claims. It starts out as a nice road and the conditions taper off the higher you go. My concern here is the snow. I was up there Monday and ran into about a foot of snow a few miles in. The roads are mild and would be fairly tame. Good fishing up there though...C & R for cutthroats!

Wise River / Big Hole valleys - Again, spent many summers camping in this area and there are a lot of roads. Downside is that the area is really spread out so I don't think we could really cover much in a weekend. There area couple of roads that I have in mind...will get some maps up shortly...that could prove to be interesting.

any trail suggestions that I get from the MT 4x4 people, I'm going to ask for nothing more than a 3...

    Trail Level Rating

Difficulty 1: Passable by stock and 2WD vehicles, improved dirt, gravel etc.
Difficulty 2: Scenic, touring trail ride; four wheel drive required occasionally, some mud holes or rocks that would stop most other vehicles are traveled easily in 4WD.
Difficulty 3: For novice and experienced drivers alike; the most fun four wheeling you can expect to have in a stock four wheeler; low range may be required often; vehicle damage is a possibility.
Difficulty 4: Not advisable for novice drivers; potentially dangerous situations; maximum ground clearance, low- est gears, and minimum tire size of 33 inches required; lockers, limited slips, winches, and jacks advised due to moderate to large rocks and obstacles, vehicle damage is likely. Full size vehicles limited to specific trails at this rating.
Difficulty 4+: Not advisable for novice drivers; potentially dangerous situations; maximum ground clearance, lowest gears, and minimum tire size of 33 inches and one locker or two limited slips required; jacks and winches indispensable due to large boulders, steep inclines; vehicle damage is very likely. Full size vehicles limited to specific trails at this rating.
Difficulty 5: No novice drivers; dangerous situations; maximum ground clearance, lowest gears, minimum tire size of 35 inches and two lockers or limited slips required; jacks and winches indispensable due to large boulders, steep inclines; vehicle damage assured. Full size vehicles limited to specific trails at this rating.
Difficulty 5+: For the hard core experienced driver; extremely dangerous situations; maximum ground clearance, lowest gears, minimum tire size of 35 inches, two lockers, and winch are required. Full size vehicles limited to specific trails at this rating.

Beech Creek for 4 days is about as good as it gets for me.
    It's a hell of a time though, so I'm not complaining!:D

We did 2 meets last summer, June and August, so stay tuned! :D

I don't plan on making it any further East than Basin...most of us Montanans are either in Bozeman or Missoula/Kalispell so Butte and that general area is a nice 1/2 way point for us. I'm not too familiar with anything closer to Idaho or I'd make some suggestions closer your way too!

    I'll keep an eye out...;)

I'd really love to do a long distance road trip again.

Last one was with the first gen cross country in the summer of 2000.

    I think I'm due...
