Oh yeah, read the directions on the back of the clear coat can and the paint can, some say that you should apply the clear within a certain time after the last layer of paint or you have to wait a certain time after.

Alright, good news. After taking the badges back down with some #1 size steel wool, I applied another few coats of paint. This time when I applied the clear coat I made sure the can was thoroughly shaken then applied 3 LIGHT coats about 4 minutes apart as the label directed. Came out great!

Good news! Just FYI, mine turned out really nice. After taping the backs and getting ready to put them back on this proud badge papa accidentally dropped one and chipped it up . I've used some matte black touch up paint to fix it back up.

Lesson, don't drop the badges on cement. :)

Great write up. Just wanted to see if there were other types of black paint i can use for my badges. Also, stupid question, Does it matter what type of black i use for the badges even if I finish with a gloss? Black is Black right?

Nope you can use flat black, high gloss black, primer black, and it will all turn out similar if you use high gloss clear on top

Yeah, the deal with the clear coat is you normally have to apply it immediately after the LAST coat of paint, or wait a really long time....like 24-48 hours, until the paint completely cures, before starting to clear coat. I've run into this problem before with the clear coating. We call it "orange peel". But above all, READ THE DIRECTIONS on the back of the can!

I personally don't think its necessary. The plastic spray paint seems to do just fine on its on in my opinion. For me, the paint is not the issue. Its the clear coat which can be tricky.

Rather than cutting tiny pieces of tape to stick to the back of the badges, try covering the whole thing with one long strip of 3M tape then trimming the excess with an exacto knife. IMO its faster, easier, cleaner and stronger. BUT - do it before you paint. this will help you out if you somehow scratch a badge with the knife (i didn't) plus it will allow you to hit those flush edges of the tape with your paint. just have plenty of fresh blades and change them out often cause they dull out fast doing this.

    Might help, but not necessary

    Awesome idea!

You can get it from your local autozone, any molding tape will work doesn't have to be 3M.

I waited 24 hours before doing my clear coats. When I did the clear coats I did 3 coats, 4 minutes apart and made sure each coat was VERY light.

    Hope this helps.

I know no one has posted here in a while but since it is a sticky I figure keep all this kind of information in one place.

I painted my door badges a few days ago (actually plasti-dipped them ;)) but decided to just remove the ones on the tailgate and leave them off.

So for anyone debadging their truck that is at least a few years old you may notice that even once you get all the adhesive off, you'll have what looks like an outline of rust where the letters were. I think its more oxidization from the chrome emblems.

Dish detergent works great for this. I just used a disposable shop towel (not a paper towel) soaked in water+dish soap and gently washed and rinsed the area and it comes off no problem.

Then just throw some wax back on it and your golden. :D
