Converting Sliding Rear Window to Power

I'm interested in doing this since I just got a camper shell and my dog will be back there........question though!

Can I buy two acuator's and runt hem with one switch? I want one to oper my truck slider, while also opening the camper's slider with the other one mounted in the camper. Is this possible?

I suppose the hard part would be routing the wire from the camper actuator into the cab? Again, will the switch operate both?

 

I am sure you can, the actuators draw a very low amperage, so two on one switch would work just fine. I would however buy the non-momentary switch (part# MAN-RS). This way you won't have to hold the switch down while they open, this idea came from Tacoma Dad back on page 4 of this thread.

I don't know how I missed this mod. As soon as my gear gets here I will be doing this too. Great idea. Is there a step by step wite up yet? I'm sure I can do this. It doesn't look to hard but it would be nice to have the step by step.

 

This is an awesome idea, and I think I will end up using that actuator. I did go on the website though and watched the video of it, and it IS pretty annoyingly noisy.

For all the mech engineering types here, is there any way to modify that sucker so it's not quite as obnoxiously noisy? Swapping out motors or something?? What exactly is the source of the noise? It sounds more than just motor strain -- sounds like theres some rattly gear chatter in there, too. There must be a way to mitigate some of the noise.

Either way, I'm probably just gonna get that one because it's cheap and deal with the noise.

Not sure why they sound so different from each other in the two videos.

 

Might be because video1 is using the correct power supply while video2 is using a 9volt battery.. In video2 while hes powering it he has a note saying at least a 5Amp circuit should be used to operate it correctly.

Purchased all the parts. Came to $121 for me after shipping. I should have enough wire, connectors, and in-line fuse holster in my garage to get it all installed. Will be my weekend project.

 

How many people have done this mod?

 

I'm going to do it this weekend. I got the actuator, mounts, and switch from UPS today.

The switch is considerably cheaper looking/feeling than I was expecting, and the white arrow stamp is badly smudged on mine. I think I'm going to send the switch back and buy a better looking one like in the link below, as I want it to have as much of a factory look as possible:

Also, I tried operating the actuator with a 9V. Holy hell, that thing makes more noise than lowering the flaps on a 747. There must be a way to make that sombitch run quieter.

Yeah i am currently scouring the web for a screw type actuator they are really really quite. little more money, but may be worth it. I am almost certain i can tuck this behind the plastic behind the seat and below the window. I will have my mechanical guys look at this in the morning. I am gonna see if i can just have the right angle bracket that glues to the window visible.

 

I looked frickin everywhere for an affordable screw actuator but the only ones I could find that had 12" stroke were either ridiculously slow (like 1/2" per second) or ridiculously strong (1000 lbs load) and expensive. If you find anything that is reasonable for this application, let us know!

 

I will let you all know, so far i am seeing exactly what you listed. May be more ideal to buy a lead screw and a jamb nut and make my own motor control out of a gear headed servo. May turn into an aftermarket item, i have been known to do such things!!

Is 9 in/sec *too* fast? I wonder how much slower it would be under load. Even under load, I bet that would whip that slider open in a hurry


On a related note, I accidentally ordered the 15 lbs mini actuator which only has a .75 in/sec rate ... it says on their website that they don't do exchanges or returns so I may be stuck with a slow-mo slider. Guess I'll have to do some sweet talking to them on the phone and hope they'll be able to work something out.

Worst case scenario, I may be able to swap out the gearmotor for something with a different gear ratio.

I was also thinking of injecting some kind of sound deadening material into the square tubing, like silicone or something. I have a feeling most of the noise is coming from the accoustics inside the tubing amplifying the sound of the churning parts inside.
