Question about the low tire pressure light

I'm currently in Korea, been here for just about a year now. My Tacoma (2007) has been living at home with my parents while I've been away.

Found out the other day the low tire pressure light apparently has been on for a while. They say the tires are fine. They haven't checked the manual yet, and obviously I don't have the manual here to check, but I'm dying to know what's going on.

Does this light ever come on for any other purposes? One thing I can think of is the truck probably just recently turned over to 30,000 miles. Does it come on as a service warning of any kind?

Make sure they check the spare tire as well. There's a sensor there too. If the light is solid, it just means there is a tire (or tires) with low pressure. If the light is blinking, then your folks need to take it to the dealer for service.

Where in Korea are ya? I did a year in Yongsan.

 

Thanks for the reply. I knew the spare also has a sensor, but I doubt it's that. The light is solid though. I doubt they actually checked the tires with a gauge, but I could be wrong (going to find out).

I think the only time it's ever gone off before was when I had a flat. But then again, other than that incident, none of the tires have varied in pressure all that much I guess.

I'm in Yongsan as well. Been here about a year now, but I'm getting out, so I have another four months or so before I start terminal leave. I know this is one of the more popular places in Korea, but no place in Korea is really for me. I make the best of it, but it's hard leaving all your toys at home.

 

I wouldn't doubt that it is the spare yet- My 2008 had the light come on in about 8 months because the spare was about 1-2psi under the threshold.

Lots folks that have had issues with the light have found the spare at least partially at fault.

I had a blast in Korea -- probably left some sort of alcoholic, but ya can't beat the food or the drinks... lol I left a Durango at home, so I didn't mind being away from it for a year...

 

& yah if it still is on for whatever reason dont sweat it too much...its not the most accurate system in the world...my tires are off my truck (bought new rims) and my light is off...and then on every once in awhile. I've noticed it likes to come on on fridays, no joke.

if it blinks it needs to go into service? cause mine blinks for a little while, then is solid. I think when I was driving my dad's pre-runner and it had a flat it did the same thing, not sure though.

 

My 06 owners manual says that if the light blinks, it needs to come in for service. Are your stock wheels in your garage? Do you have the stock spare with sensor installed? Both of those could affect how the TPMS light illuminates.

 

When I first got my Tacoma, I figured that system would be a PITA that would someday go off for no reason. But after about a year with no issues (25,000 miles) I thought maybe it would be more reliable than I expected. Could still be the case, who knows. I hate not being there to look at this for myself.

How hard is it to disable that system? Not ready to do that yet, but if it becomes a frequent occurrence over insignificant pressure variances, it might be something I'd want to do.

 

The disable procedure only works on 06 models... sorry bud... you may just need to do the black tape mod over your light if you decide you don't like seeing the light.

In all likelihood, one or some of your tires are low on pressure (and prolly not by much). Have your folks fill them up a bit (including the spare) and see if the light goes away.
