DVD and Blu-Ray Obsolete?

Streaming video from the Internet and other means of direct digital delivery are going to put optical formats out of business entirely over the next few years.

I wouldn't doubt that at all. The future is all about digital media. Remember when people bought CD's?

Of course, one day the internet will take us over.

I say no, have you ever downloaded an HD movie. Even the best encoded movies at 720p are about 4-5 gigs. Getting them on DVD or BluRay is much more convenient with services like NetFlix. IMO

 

It would require to much HD storage to backup your library, DVD and blu ray will stay for a while unless a new storage idea comes out. I can see movies being sold on usb drives.

 

You guys got to look at the quote harder - "over the next few years." I'm pretty confident that in the next few years HD content will easier to download. Terrabyte HDs are available now for a somewhat descent price and I could see them coming down as newer technology becomes available.

 

It'll be here for many years to come.... and maybe different variations of quality & storage capabilities.

There will always be a 'need' to put data/movies/whatever on 'something' and carry it with you.

Besides that - a vast quantity of people can only afford to be several steps behind the biggest & latest technology advancements. It'll be a VERY long time before people can afford to get away from DVD's, Blue-ray, or some other data carrying media.

 

I couldnt see this happening any time soon. Remember BluRay hasnt been around that long. Maybe in a decade....maybe.

 

No. People like physically owning things. Having it on the self. I know I do. It's not the same to sit in front of a harddrive thinking, 'What do I feel like watching, I think I'm in a mood for a comedy...'

 

Also, many ISPs are considering caps on bandwidth. For most users, this isn't a big deal. But, stream a few HD movies off the net and you're getting close.

The infrastructure will eventually catch up to the demand, but until then, the discs will probably be preferable...

 

It will just be like cd's, gone in a few years and everyone will be making their own stuff!

 

That is because the technology is in its infancy. Give it some time. Look how long it took music cd's, from then till now. 1982 was when the 1st music CD was released.

 

Why is everyone saying the CD is dead? There's millions of them at Wally Mart. I just bought one last week.

 

Wally mart by me had a half of a row of all the different music together. They have for the most part done away with music CD's. I'm sure it varies by location. Some areas may still purchase CD's.

When was the last time anyone purchased a music CD?

It was 2-3 years ago for me.

They were offering prepaid downloads for purchase.
