X2, maybe right before she got tackled she mentioned something about killing her mom or even the cop. Its easy for people to sit here and armchair quarterback it, but in this line of work the second you take something too lightly, you can end up dead.

After watching it just now since I couldn't at work, I think the officer over estimated, possibly slipped and hit her just wrong to make her fall down like that. I honestly don't believe he had the intention of slamming her down. She also looked like she was about to run too...quick easy way to stop that a potential foot race lol.

I really don't think he expected it to end up that way at all.

It's whether or not the officer believed the force he used was reasonable and necessary to effect the arrest. You can argue that until the cows come home.

He can use a level higher than what she is resisting with. If she is resisting by using passive resistance (walking away when ordered to stop) he can use physical non lethal force that does not casue serious bodily injury (a takedown) or open handed techniques such as paincompliance. Police around here are not taught "reasonable and necessary" but are taught "immediate and overwhelming" legally authorised use of force.

So long as he told her to stop and she ignored him I have no clue why anyone would side with her or why his department has suspended him.

Hmmmmm.......I've never had the shit kicked out of me by police. I was arrested once a long time ago and even then I was treated very well. Why you ask, BECAUSE I COOPERATED! If you wander off, give them shit, resist, or do anything you are told not to do you deserve what happens; within reason of course. What most don't realize is that it just takes one time of giving someone the benefit of doubt to get a cop killed.

Thanks for this post. It does suck. Sometimes it sucks wearing the uniform cuz ppl look at u like u have done something wrong before u do anything. Yesterday my partner and I had an 84 year old shoplifter! It sucked! Now let me ask u. If u were to see one officer talking to the old lady and paper arresting her what would u think?

That looked to be a pretty hard hit but cops do take a lot of crap to keep the rest safe. It kinda sucks they get paraded on trial when small crap like this happens, Some Rodney king stuff yeah thats bad, sometimes kids need to be put in place, maybe a cops job wouldnt be that hard if parents could still whoop their kids butt without getting arrested. In this case by what the girl was doing to her mom, the cop might have been just helping with some parenting.

HOLY CRAP! Someone read one of my posts!
That would be tough. I think as long as the old lady is not being roughed up (which I seriously doubt she was) I would think that sucks for her and for you. If I was going to be mad at someone I would be mad at the store owner for calling you. I would think something like that they could settle without calling the cops. But then again who knows! Maybe granny was packin or hopped up on meds and was being hostile.
I hope you didn't catch too much flack from people passing by. Most people don't stop to think and put themselves in your shoes. Cops are just an easy target for the aggressions of the small minded.

Granted, we can all sit back and armchair quarterback this one all evening long but a few things seem kinda strange:

    1. he seems to charge while she is out of the field of view

    2. she does in fact reach towards her bra or within her shirt at the neck-line, he was still in charge mode

    3. after he has her cuffed he never frisked her to see if she was carrying

In the heat of the moment, I would like to think that I would not have used such force, but if someone worked in that line of duty for long enough, I would imagine you would tend to expect the worst from any given scenario that started with violent actions....you'd probably be a bit jaded also.

Not saying he's right or wrong, just saying I think it would have been justified had he frisked.

You guys are all missing the point. He did not follow any procedures in trying to apprehend her. Did he see her assaulting people or is going by what the witnesses are telling him? Could they be exaggerating? Remember he didn't see the video. Keep in mind she is a fifteen year old girl. With that use of force had that been a male would he have just shot him? (sarcasm) One of the things you are taught in the academy is not to run up on a perp, especially from the back or side. It's hard to see if he was shouting verbal commands for her to stop. All he had to do was ID he himself in a aggressive manner and I'm sure she would have stopped. Anyway you look at it.....it's hard for me to say but that was a punk move on his part and very unprofessional. If he came down to L.A and worked the 77th he would piss his pants and cry to be transferred out. It's a messed up situation for both parties. I do feel for the cop but he should have known better. He may loose his job and he just set that girl up financially for a long time.
