2006 Tacoma navigation/ audio questions ? Please help

I've recently sold my old 99 taco and up graded to a used 2006

My problem is the cd deck won't except CDs.

Rather then fixing the cd deck. I'd like to install a touch navigation/ cd player or something of that nature

If anyone has this mod done or can recommend a brand or website it would be greatly Appreciated

It all depends on your budget and what features you like. Alpine, pioneer, kenwood and eclipse are brands that I would recommend. Look on Amazon, crutchfield, pacific stereo, and sonic electronix to see which one has the best price.

 

Skip Eclipse. They are gone from the US market.

Look at the pioneer avic x920 or 930. Those are nice units and should be within your budget.

 

For the sake of research, I went to Crutchfield and input my vehicle info, the site identified the units that would fit my Tacoma. From there it's a matter of choosing the features and price that meet your needs. You can choose to then shop elsewhere and piece the necessary necessary head unit, wiring, bezel etc. I chose to just purchase from Crutchfield, you can't buy the kind of support they offer for free (IMHO). By the way I chose the JVC unit primarily because of the detachable face plate and it meets my other needs as well. Hope this helps.

 

Well you can do the install yourself so that means you have a budget of $1000 for parts.

I did the pioneer Avic x 910 BT in a black metra dash kit, wire harness, PAC steering wheel interface, and iPod interface cable for under $1000.
There are some really good write ups on here about how to do it. And I believe the only tools you really need are a 10 mm socket and a crimp tool to crimp the wireharness to the headunit.

Crutchfield includes step by step instructions on how to do the install, and if you buy the headunit from them you can usually get the rest of the stuff for free. I got a local shop to price match Amazon and got my headunit for $700ish. Didn't get the warranty though and I'm kicking myself for it now.

 

Buy from an authorized local dealer so that you keep your warranty. I have and recommend the kenwood dnx 9960. Should be within your budget. There is no reason to shop at crutchfield as any head unit will fit there are none will not. Crutchfield also has horrible prices. You're better off buying from a local dealer.

 

I would not buy another Kenwood product.

I started with the DNX7140 which shit the bed after several months and was back and forth to their repair center 4 times. Eventually, they replaced it with a 7160. It's only slightly better as it hangs on occasion but it can be fixed by removing the fuse (yes. removing the fuse). Every once and a while, you'll switch to the navigation display (it uses a Garmin nav unit) and all of a sudden no steering wheel control works and the head-unit touch input becomes very, very slow. The DVD often fails to read the disc too.

 

Can't find a avic x 910. But I'm seriously considering buying either the 920 or 930. Is there much difference? If anyone has either I'd like to know you. Opinions

 

I dont like any of the older Kenwood units. They are so slow on boot up. Not had any serious issues with the 9960. I have had very rare instances of glitches but a reboot always fixed it and the reboot is very fast compared to the old Kenwood units. Have to reboot once every month or two. It has a reboot button and not a hole you have to shove a paperclip in like older units.

 

And every time you do that, your presets are gone as are your setting for balance, eq, etc.

 

No, I dont even lose my custom TRD boot screen, or any settings. Like I said... I odnt like the older Kenwood units but the 9960 and up dont seem to have those old issues.

 

they are both pretty sweet, I'd go for the 930 if I had the option to upgrade. i think it had a larger screen too
