question about dpms lower reciever

    Can you put a 5.56 nato upper receiver on a .223 lower receiver. The one my ffl dealer found is only stamped .223. Any help would be appreciated.

    The original .223 chamber will not properly chamber the 5.56 round. A gun marked .223 should not use the 5.56 ammo because it might misfire. An AR with the 5.56 NATO chamber will handle .223 ammo with no problem.

    There is a newer design called the Wylde chamber for the .223 that will safely handle 5.56 rounds. I've seen Rock River Arms advertising this chamber in their hunting models but have never tried it.

    My Bushmaster has the original .223 chamber and I do not shoot 5.56 in it.
