Installing rack on canopy...

I have a snugtop canopy on my tacoma that has no rails or rack whatsoever on top. It's just a slick painted surface. Well, I now need a roof rack. Is there a way to install one to this type of canopy?

 

You can install Yakima or Thule "tracks" on anything. My shell had the tracks pre-installed and I provided my own Yak Control Towers and crossbars.

You don't want to the drill into thickest part of your shell's roof. Some info in this thread:

Before you drill it, consider taking it to a Snugtop dealer for them to do it or send it back to Snugtop for the installation. I know it's a hassle but if you penetrate the 'glass, you void the lifetime warranty which Snugtop offers.

Also, if you have never drilled into a gel coat or fiberglass, make sure you get the right drill bits, or you will have cracks and chips with every hole drilled It could get ugly...

 

I installed a Yakima track system on my ARE shell. Yakima includes instruction on how to install them but in a nutshell:
Measure out where you want them; you don't want to drill through the center reinforcing honeycomb section on most tops.
Mark your holes them drill a small pilot hole before switching to a larger bit; putting tape on the hole should help prevent chipping. Use a new (or at least sharp) drill bit; I like the ones with a pilot tip.
Use a small amount of silicon on the bolt/in the hole and install the tracks.
Install risers/bars and enjoy.

Mine has been on since 2006 and I've carried around 150#s on it more than once in varying combinations of canoes, kayaks, bikes and lumber and so far no leaks.
