Truck won't move in 4x4 with wheels turned

I have a 2010 tacoma 4x4 double cab long bed. After about a 1K miles I installed the toytec ultimate lift with light racing UCA and 1" diff drop spacers. After installing the lift I noticed that when the truck is in H4 the front drive shafts seem to bind to the point that the truck won't move when making sharp turns.....like in a parking lot. It almost feels like you are trying to drive with the parking brake on. If I straighten the wheels out the truck will move again. I didn't try the 4 wheel drive before I added the lift so I don't know if the problem existed before I installed the lift. The truck drives perfect in H2. No alignment issues, no vibrations, great ride. Has any one else experienced this issue with 4 wheel drive?

Might be a good idea to read the owner's manual.....

 

Welcome to Tacoma World, be sure to ask people here before you do stuff that might tear up your truck. We more and likely have made the mistakes and you can learn from our experiences.

 

Do NOT ever drive in 4x4 on dry pavement -- especially trying to make sharp turns.

Why does Toyota tell you to use 4 wheel drive once a month for 10 miles? Quit snowing here last month.

Do NOT use part time 4wd systems on pavement. You will break your truck eventually if you keep doing it. Read this:

Before you ask, no, you didn't kill it just by taking one turn in the parking lot. Keep your ears out for unusual noises and your ass out for unusual vibrations/thunks/grinds/etc., and if you don't have either, you got off without penalty...this time.

Don't make a habit of it.

I'm still trying to figure that out myself, because the rationale of lubing everything makes no sense.

2gen Tacomas have an automatic disconnecting differential 4wd system. This system works in such a manner than the front differential gears are always spinning when the truck is moving. Seeing as the transmission powers the t-case, which powers the rear diff, which powers the rear wheels in 2wd...all portions of the 4wd system that HAVE lube ARE being lubed whenever the truck is rolling, even in 2wd.

Furthermore, it doesn't take ten miles to rotate everything in a diff through the oil bath. 50 feet would do it.

My guess is the real reason is to prevent actuators from sticking.

 

to lube up the 4wd system by moving the parts around. You can just throw it in 4hi on a straight section of paved road for a few minutes, just DONT turn on a grippy surface with 4wd activated.

 

Engaging 4x4 to lube the system and cranking it to full lock on dry pavement are not the same thing .

 

Thanks to everyone for the feedback. I did read the owners manual and was performing the 10 mile per month drive in H4 just to keep things lubricated when I pulled into the gas station and experienced this issue. I'll make sure not to do more than drive straight on pavement in 4x4.

I researched this forum for months before adding my lift kit and UCA's. I found more great info than I could imagine. Awesome forum. Thanks again.

 

FWIW , I think the owner's manual could definitely be a little more clear on this particular point .
