rear shock size?????

what size shock will work great with a 3" leaf lift. extended length, travel, collapsed length?

 

8.5"? Is the lift on? If so measure from shock mount to shock mount and report back here. Anyone know what the stocks are? Iirc it's 6" of travel but idk for sure, so technically you'll need a 9" but idk of anyone that makes a 9" or our trucks

So chris if expo leaves lift me 4.5" in the rear how do 10" stroke shock work for me? I've already lifted and measured and they will have ~5" of travel up and down. Is it just dependent on where the compressed length starts?

Idk if it's really a question. But the shocks I'm running are only have 2" more travel than stock, but the expos are probably gonna net me 4.5". I guess I'm just coming to the conclusion that it doesnt technically matter what stroke the shock is, just where it's mounted and what length it is at ride height.

 

Yeah I know I'll have more travel with the pack, but hypothetically say it only gave me 2" of travel or something. Idk. And bumps are on the list, probably going 4.5" because I can't find any 5" or 5.5" but I'll probably just measure it out once everything else is installed

 

Ok yeah i am doing bilstein shock's but i don't want to hit shock before bump stop but get the best travel?

 

your best bet would be to look into Icon for the rear shocks. They are good for a 3" lift. And they ride good. down side is they are a bit pricey. Or you can get some bilstein 8 in shocks.

i got me a six inch fabtech and i want to switch to coil overs in the front if possible and get me some new shocks for the rear best choices would be and this is on a semi tight budget due to baby on the way

 

With the rear shocks still in measure from eye to eye. That measurement should be in-between the compressed and extended length of the shocks that you will buy.

Then take the shocks out and jack up one side of the truck until a rear wheel gets off the ground. Measure from shock mount to shock mount (eye to eye, just no shock in there) on the side that's in the air.

Take that second measurement and subtract the first measurement from it, then multiply by two (because the shock has to go up AND down).


Now you have the travel number to determine what length shock you need.

Quick example:

Ride height measurement=20"

Extended measurement with now shocks is 25"

A shock with a 10" stroke is required, it's compressed length should be 15" and extended length 25"

Stock travel on a first gen is 6.5"

Most go with an 8" or 8.5" travel when they do the standard 1.5" to 1.75" rear lift that comes with many of the 3" front lifts...

If the OP is lifting the front 3", his rear lift is likely within the 1.75" lift and not the 3" as that would end up with the rear higher than the front...

As for the 9" travel shock, the Bilstein 5125 comes in a 9.24" - part number BE5-A463-H6 (15" collapsed - 24" extended)

Although, there is a better alternative which is the Bilstein 7100 10" short body - part number AK7110SB (14" collapsed - 24" extended)
