Need help removing my oil filter

I'm doing my 5000 miles oil change and I'm having issues removing the old oil filter. it seems really tight. I tried the socket and straps to remove it and no avail. I appreciate your advice

It was hard removing mine too the first time. Just keep going at it, sometimes it seems like its rubbery, right? You force it with the socket and instead of the filter moving, its the wrench. Or maybe that was just mine... but just keep at it and force it, it'll let go. Worst comes to worst you dent an old oil filter that you are replacing anyway. Just be careful.

Yeah, it's counter clockwise. Toward the driver's side.

 

When I worked in the forklift shop at a minerals processing plant the old timer there shared a tip with me. As long as the surface is clean and you lube the oring you really don't need to tighten the filter on there so tight you can't get it off without a tool. In other words, in the hundreds of filters I've put on, I've done them all snug by hand, and can take them off by hand, and none have leaked. As with everything use your intuition and sense to determine how tight you need it.

That being said, if you can't get it off with an oil filter wrench you might try channel locks, failing that try a pipe wrench, failing that get a screw driver or chisel and tap at the base, angling the tool so you're basically turning it as you tap. Failing that, punch a thick screw driver through the middle of the oil filter side ways and try to turn it. Failing that seek help.

I think I used a 30 year old snap-on band filter...the clearance for filter pliers wasn't that good. Now I have filter wrench that slips on the back and has three fingers that tighten as you turn...very handy when the back of the filter is easiest to get to.

i had to use one of those band oil filter wrenches to get the factory filter off. dented the hell outta the filter but it finally broke loose.cuss a little.....it seems to help

 

i just did my first oil change last friday. My was really tight in there as well. try drilling a small hole on top of the filter to break the vaccum seal and remember righty tighty left loose. when you put the new one in just hand tighten the filter. good luck

 

Try the lazy mans way for the first time.Let a reputable shop do it. Not iffy lube etc..

 

Try stopping by the local Harley shop and picking up an oil filter socket. The stock Harley oil filter for the Evos and Twin Cams is the exact same size (and will actually screw onto the truck) as the Mobil 1 oil filter. When I have a hard time getting the oil filter off I just use my oil filter wrench (end cap style) for my bike. No screwdrivers, no extra mess, and it comes right off.

The correct size socket style unit works everytime. However I've been there with screwdriver stabbing...
Like mentioned if you lube up the gasket seal on the new filter and get your filter on solidly hand tight, you should be fine. Racing, hardcore offroad stuff you may want to lightly wrench the filter on, or get filters with a nut welded on the outside with a hole drilled thru it for a lanyard, so the filter could loosen perhaps slightly, but never fall off.

 

I finally got it removed it took me 2 days!!! I didnt want to put a hole on the oil filter. I had to call my dad to help me with some muscle, my arms was sore the 2nd day we used the Autozone OEM adjustable oil filter remover and use a long wrench socket for more torque.

... ^^^ ... this is what I have for stuck filters ... otherwise, I use a "sticky rubber glove" to take them off and put them on.
