New rack and pinion noise whining

I've been searching around for information on Sterring racks.

Well recently my left sus. came apart and tore up some stuff on my truck.

one of the things that had to replaced is the steering rack.

Well the mechanic told me when I left that rack was making noise cause he did not have time to bleed it out. And he stated that the rack will self bleed itself? I have never heard of this.

Now two weeks later this *new* rack and pinion is still making noise as I rev up the mtn. at around 5 to 15 miles an hour and in parking lots and city driving. and I swear I hear it on hwy as well sometimes.

I was reading about clogged filter below reservoir as possible fix. And I read that It could just be a bad rack with some type of internal leak.

I do not know much about the inner workings of this part and need some help.

I feel like telling the mechanic I don't want the thing in my truck(441$), I have never had to listen to noisy power steering before this install.

Need advice on how to handle this situation with the mechanic.

 

I would try cleaing the screen, it pretty easy and fixes many of the noisy PS problems.
The PS system will self bleed... but if you never, or infrequently turn to full lock it may never completly flush. Go to an empty parking lot and do some figure 8s at full lock (dont go to full lock and let off as most do). Do this a buch of times and see if it gets a little quieter.
I had air in my lines and did the figure 8s to flush, afterward a turn my truck off and looked into the steerin fluid resivoir and I could see bubbles in the fluid that had worked thier way out.

 

I used to install racks as part of my job. I would start the engine and turn the wheel all the way to one side (it should get noisy at this point), hold it there for about 5 seconds, then turn fully to the other side and hold for 5 seconds. Repeat this a few times and it should quiet right down.

 

Also check the level.

Great I wanted some reassurance about this bleeding technique. I called the mechanic and when I can get it back into his shop he will take a look at it, he says. Btw on my lunch break I went and made figure eights down at the public park parking lot while ppl watched and looked at me like I was crazy. I left considerable rubber on the road with not so perfect figure eight tracks. Made me realize I need to work on my technique. thanks for the replies

 

The other night the sound was driving me crazy so I stopped and put some more fluid in the reservoir and it stopped!
It turns out it needed to be at top of fill line.

 


