    PSJ,
Based upon my experience, some are...some aren't. It's easy to tell...just drop the console (one screw) and see if the wiring harness is there. If so, you have power.

However, this does not mean that you have the thermal transducer (ambient temp sensor) installed behind the grill of the truck to give you a temp reading....you will have to investigate and see if yours has it. Probably not.

The display will still work, but you will have dashes where the temp readout would be.

People have had success getting the sensor from a dealership or salvage yard and running the wiring themselves.

I just bought my Tacoma DoubleCab yesterday from a used dealer. He refused to try and fix the Compass/Temperature display, but agreed to pay to have the tire pressure sensor fixed. I followed the instructions here. Worked like a CHAMP!!!!

    Thanks!

The clips are a bit hard to pull out but it is a very easy fix. Thanks for the info, it helped a lot.

Add one more... many thanks for the info and an easy fix for sure.
One of the 510's was hanging onto the pc by one connection only, at 45 degrees.
Re-soldered both and added a (small) dab of JB Weld to the the middle edge of each.

I couldn't see a problem on the chips but put some solder on them anyway and whalla.... compass works again. My dealer quoted about $270 for a replacement module (vs. the $800 others have said they were quoted).

Worked just as described. Saved tons of $$. But be careful when pulling the 4 grey plastic clips away from the smoked plastic covering the digital readout. They were very brittle. Broke one. Three were ok after I learned to do it gingerly. Thanks!!

Thanx for this write up. I just completed this on My GF truck as her compass quit working a few days ago. I had pulled out the board and could not see any thing noticeable so I installed the board back in the truck. Then I came back to read more on TW and read that there was some that were not noticeable and they solder them any ways and it worked. So I pulled the board back out and solder mine, installed it back and it worked. Thanx again TW and for Secret Squirrel for writing this up. Rep is added to Secret Squirrel.

Mine quit working about eight months ago and I wasnt going to pay the $800.00 bucks the dealer wanted so I figure I would try to do the fix myself.Well it took me about twenty minutes from start to finish.Works great!!

Thanks for the great write up on the fix.

Im about to do the same thing. The compass/temp thing doesnt work either, but instead of trying to get the dealer to fix it, I'm just gonna try fixing it myself.

Great thread and my problem SEEMED to be exactly as posted, as when I pulled the card out, one of the resistors was completely off, laying in the bottom of the mounting assy. resoldered and still doesn't work. Anyone have a schematic of this circuit card? I have power across the resistor, but very little resistance when no power applied (maybe because it's still in the circuit). Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

    c hoov,

    Try resoldering the resistors first.

It is possible you shorted to ground (there is a ground point very close to one of the resistor pads) which in turn burned up one or both of the corresponding transistors. These are the two small transistors near the '911' resistor next to the display. You will need a steady hand and a small tipped iron to get them changed out.

    Hope that helps....

I was going to try the fix, and mentioned it to my dealer. I got lucky, and he said it was under the certified preowned warranty. He could not believe he had a replacement module in stock. Now it works. :)

Thanks much Greg. I believe the resistors were just too oxydized to solder, hence making no connection. Went to RS and bought new, soldered them in place and works just fine now. AND you are correct, the originals are tiny and hard to keep in place/solder. As many posts there are on this subject, obvious very poor quality and poorToyota support for an obvious quality defenciency. Shame on them!
