30-06 ammo

Hey guys new to the Gun world and bought my first rilfe a Howa M-1500 30-06. put about 100 rounds down range so far and am not too happy with the price per round of 30-06 ammo. I really Like the Winchester Power Max 150 grain but its 27.00 for a box of 20 at the local shop. At walmart they are selling Federal soft point 150 gr for 13.95 for a box of 20 and they are constantly sold out. Its not bad stuff for what I want to use it for.

Anyone have any particular 30-06 ammo they like or something that is cheap like this federal ammo?

Nice rifle but a 30-06 is really not a target rifle to much recoil and way to expensive I don't know about you but I'm done after about 10 or 15 rounds. As for Ammo Walmart is your best bet for cheap ammo that's when they have it. I think Cabelas has the Federal ammo pretty cheap.

 

Yeah im thinking about getting a .308 too for more target shooting or something smaller. just to plink down the range and not have to worry about spending 100 bucks for ammo each time.

 

I use Remington 30-06 Springfield 180 grain. $22 at Dicks Sporting Goods

 

i've been shooting federal fusions(150gr) thru my remmy 700 and they arent priced bad at all. our dicks sporting goods always has tones of boxes of them. nice grouping too.(same as i use for hunting here)

 

i started reloading with my 06. i got a load down that would clover leaf 3 shot groups all day. i saved $$ reloading.

now i shoot a weatherby, and a box is $60. i dont worry about holes in paper anymore. i just hunt.

play with cheap ammo, hunt with good ammo.

 

If you want a really cheap plinker pick up a rifle that shoots surplus ammo like .223, 7.62x39, or 5.45x39. You can buy steel case ammo in any of these calibers for alot cheaper than brass in any other caliber.

 

when they have them back on order cheaper than dirt has golden bear brand for $0.57 a piece. not to crazy about that brand but if all you want it for is target, then that's the cheapest i found. be sure you clean your gun really well after.

 

Thanks. I looked at them before but was steered away by alot of people from golden bear. Im thinking I just have to wake up early and check out walmart when they get their next shipment and buy them out of federal soft point.

 

Just an fyi to those who do shoot the steel case ammo, it will DESTROY your extractor on an AR. I have seen it alot and it sucks to replace that part. Pay a little more for ammo and save yourself the trouble. Just my .02

To the OP I would say the Federal Fusion is your best bet on cheaper ammo or start reloading.

You have to join an NRA affilated club to purchase from, but the prices are very good.

 

Wow thats cheap! anything to look out for in surplus ammo? I assume just clean your gun out well after so many shots but anything else?

 

That's all that is required because of some of the coorosive primers depending on how old the ammo is.

 

You can do what I do. Ask walmart when their shipments come in. Mine gets it's ammo on thursday, and when I show up there are only 1-3 people waiting like me. I usually get the ammo I want too.

 

The CMP ammo is not corrosive and is actually very good/accurate.
The brass is reloadable also -

 

I have some Lake City early 50's produced for the Korean War that I purchased from CMP, and I suspect that it is corrosive.

I'm not sure about the Greek again depending when it was made.

Even if it is corrosive proper cleaning takes care of it as evidenced by my
'03's that shot virtually all corrosive primers and the bores are in great shape.

 

I have had great success with Hornady ammo on deer and on target through my 700
