Any Foresters out there? (The occupation not the Subaru)

Hey, I am planning on being a Forester or a Wildlife Biologist major (aiming for Forester if I can) when I get to college (hoping for Mississippi State or Stephen F. Austin) and I was wondering if y'all could tell me what y'all do on a daily basis for your work. I have done research (wikipedia and a couple other sites) and I am interested but I want to know what y'all do in the real world day by day. Thanks

My undergrad is in forestry (BS Forest Resources and Conservation from UF) and grad school was in environmental planning (ASU). A lot of the guys I went to school with got jobs with paper companies doing crusing/estimating. I do NEPA/environmental permitting work on transportation projects. Most of my time is spent at a computer these days and I dont get out in the field much, which seems pretty normal as careers progress. In my field wildlife biology seems like it is a bit more of a useful degree as you can do all the same work I do and a bit more stuff with endangered species. At UF the forestry and wildlife programs were in the same building and we took a lot of the same classes.

Check out some info on the southeastern schools forestry conclave. It is basically a lumberjack competition between all of the schools in the southeast.

 

BSF University of Missouri. Bachelor Science Forestry. I'm a cop. Wanted to be fish and wildlife officer here in Florida but, things worked out differently (long storey). I am very happy with my career choice though. Had friends in school that recieved jobs with paper mills, Dept. Natrl Resources, State, local and federal forestry dept's. and landscaping companies. some went into the arbor business themselves. Good carreer won't make much money. However, you do have options. I suggest you find a counselor when you get to get to school. There are pro's and con's to any job.
