Bicyclists on the road

Anyone else annoyed w/them? I'm all about wanting to be green and save the planet. But they never follow traffic laws and constantly weave in and out of traffic. Unless there is a specific bike lane, they are hazardous.

 

I agree. They tend to act like they own the road instead of sharing the road.

 

Yes. I agree they are a hazard, they are putting their lives in danger ever time they ride. I see fatalities in the news here in San Diego probably once a month or so. I have no problems with them when they obey the law, it's the ones who disregard stop signs that are the real trouble.

A few years ago when gas prices were astronomical much like they are today I rode my bike to work for about 5 months straight. I always obeyed the stop signs because I didn't want to die.

 

They are horrible in Boston! I try to be aware of them and give them space but they seem to always do stupid stuff like run red lights, weave through traffic, or try to pass you when you're making a turn with your blinker on and I've almost hit them numerous times. My feeling is if you want to ride on the road you should have to obey the traffic laws like everyone else.

 

Our city recently took one entire lane of a one way street and turned it into a bike lane. Biggest waste of money ever! It doesn't matter if they have two feet or eight feet of bike lane, they all ride on the white line or to the left of it.

Never had a problem with a random person in jeans and tshirt riding a bike. It's always the spandex bike riders that are the issue. I think they are the motorcycle gangs of the future. They are definitely looking for trouble, not just a workout.

There has to be a few bikers on here. Flame suit on!

Growing up as one of those cyclists, I don't complain. Moreover, there are too many positives out of cycling to complain. However, I acknowledge that if they choose to not adhere to road rules, they may experience road rage, or worse yet, road stupidity.

I am also an avid motorcyclist. However, I've seen too many stupid 'bikers' on the road who give most of us a bad name.

Personally, I'm more concerned about bikers than cyclists.

Before moving to NC from NY it didn't bother me much as most of the Roadies in NY were smart enough to keep it in the shoulder. Probably because they knew it would only be a matter of time before someone blasted them but here in NC, Charlotte area at least shoulders are like the Unicorn.(Don't exist and are only a myth, pretty poor road design here IMHO) so they are always riding in the middle of the lane as if they are a motor vehicle. Than they get have the nerve to get pissed when you honk or ride up their ass after honking and not moving because they are pedaling at 12 mph in a 45 and often don't bother to move to the edge of the road for you to pass. It seems a good portion of Roadies in this area are self righteous pricks. They act as if they own the road and even though they are doing 1/4 of the speed limit they feel that you should follow behind them rather than have common courtesy and move to the edge of the lane so you can pass. Plus it's hard to respect grown men who wear tight spandex and are proud to do so.

 

I'm sure a bunch of people here would shit thier pants driving through Berkely California. It's a F$&#in cult here, skeebies to college kids comming out of the wood work just trying to get to point B.

As a long time Mountain Biker, I would often ride my beater to classes when I was in College. I'd have my headphones on, sometimes darting in between the crawling taffic. On the rare occasions I would shoot out into the intersection, was when the lights had JUST turned green, and I was coming down the hill and will beat all the cars off the line, if timed well. I took the risks and new what I was getting into (or going to get run over by). I cant stand it when roadies hug the left of the bike lane and hate it when some people ride the wrong way on the road. Cars are looking to their left, so if you are coming the wrong way on the right-your a douche. The only time I would get pissed at the cars, is when they are not looking left at ALL and pulling out of a parking lot/driveway, or pull over the crosswalk section. Defintely booted a few hoods with my cleats on assholes who saw me coming and purposesly crawled over the cross walk to force me off my way.

 

I too am riding my bike to work as of lately. 4 miles one way. I always ride with traffic stay on the shoulder and stop at signs and lights. If these idiots are weaving in and out and not obeying the laws then they deserve to get some road rash or worse.

I have had some drivers honk at me for no apparent reason but as if to try and startle me or something. That I fucken hate! I am saving a ton in gas money and getting in shape at the same time so its a no brainer.

 

The commuters don't seem to be the problem (at least around here), more often than not is the bicycle messengers. They've usually got a big box balanced on their handlebars and are trying to get to their next drop as fast as possible. Can't blame them for trying to make a buck but it's not worth getting run over in the process.

 

I don't mind them at all.do I think it's strange to sit in the lane at a red light??YES do I think it's retarded to wear full lance Armstrong gear FUCK YEAH!!!! It isnt the tour de france. Maybe I'm missing something

Rock on. I'll be cycling to work again starting next month after I move. I think my commute will go from 5 miles down to 3. Also it will be a lot safer for me as won't have to go through the industrial district where there are no bike lanes.

I too have been honked at for no reason and It's totally uncalled for and is an illegal use of the horn, where is a cop when you need one?

 

Unless it is an organized road ride or there is a large group I tend to ride fat tire bikes on trails most often. I am a biker and have problem with how some people on bikes just are too full of themselves and cannot ride single file close to curb or edge of road without taking up whole lanes of traffic and cause traffic jams. This might be OK on wknds early in the morning but c'mon, not in rush hr on weekdays. I refuse to ride in the road for the most part so anytime it isn't a straight up trail then I'm on the sidewalk or grass going around pedestrians on one of my fat tire bikes. IF there is a section where I MUST ride in the road, it's damn sure not out in the middle of the lane, it'd be over on the edge. In a neighborhood, it's sidewalks, greenbelts or on the left hand side of the road where I can see shit coming and get out of the way instead of getting blindsided from behind. This is good for when I ride with music too...I don't care, say what you want about that. As with everything else, people riding around looking at their intestines will cause issues for everyone else who rides paying attention and not riding with some smirky above the laws of physics attitude out in the middle of roads causing traffic messes. I also have several places to ride the road bike completely removed from any traffic and that is much more preferable to sharing with mindless commuters trying to text and talk on phones and beat off or whatever else fools do to distract themselves from driving.
